Final
editPaul Botha of South Africa won the competition with a personal best, in what has historically been "South Africa's best event" at the championships.[5] He was behind the favorite Niklas Kaul, the former decathlon winner,[6] after three attempts, but moved to the lead on his fourth throw.[7][8] Niklas Kaul's silver was especially impressive because he did it just two days after winning the youth decathlon.[9]
Manu Quijera was in position to medal early on, set to duplicate the success of fellow Spaniard Pablo Bugallo at the 2013 championships. However he was later surpassed by Vladislav Palyunin, the second-best seed due to his performance at the 2015 Asian Youth Athletics Championships, for the bronze.[10] Quijera had to settle for 4th place in a new Spanish record with the 700-gram javelin, with Palyunin winning the only Uzbek medal at the championships.[9]
van Vuuren, who led the qualifiers, only finished 5th place with 76.04 m. His qualifying mark of 79.04 m would have been enough to win the competition, but throws from qualification did not count towards the final placings.[9][11]

Reactions
editTwo days after the championships, Finnish U18 thrower Toni Keränen threw a 78.55-metre mark at the Youth Elite Games in Vaasa. It was noted that this was six centimetres better than the gold medal-winning throw in Cali, though Keränen did not have a chance to claim a medal because Finland did not send him to the championships.[12]
Though silver medalist Niklas Kaul would eventually switch his career focus to the decathlon, his 2015 result at the championships led many to question if Kaul would have more success switching back to the standalone javelin competition, which Kaul had not ruled out.[13]
