Draft:2024 Bangladesh Judicial Coup Attempt

  • Comment: This submission needs more sources that explicitly call this a coup attempt. Jdcomix (talk) 11:40, 11 August 2024 (UTC)

On 10 August 2024, following the ousting of Sheikh Hasina a judicial coup was attempted by Sajeeb Wazed, former minister of state for information and broadcasting, Mohammad A. Arafat, and the former chief justice of Bangladesh, Obaidul Hassan. The coup was not successful and failed.

Planned Events

edit

As per leaked documents from the media outlets in Bangladesh, the planned coup was going to occur when Dr. Yunus was at Rangpur on the 10th of August to visit Shaheed Abu Sayed's grave[1]. The plan was that the judges of the Appellate Division of the High Court would convene a full court to declare the interim government illegal. Immediately, a rogue group of 25 army officers, multiple police officers, and Awami League workers who were loyal to former prime minister Sheikh Hasina were going to cause anarchy in the capital, Dhaka. This was to allow Sheikh Hasina who was in asylum in India to return to Bangladesh. Meanwhile the Chief Justice would call an emergency meeting with 57 judges, and declare the interim government as an illegal government.[2]

Information Leak and Consequent Events

edit

The planned events for the coup were leaked by informants in the army, and as a result army officers rushed from their quarters and surrounded the High Court. The army along with student protesters then forced the Chief Justice, Obaidul Hassan, to resign from his role[3], thus the coup attempt failed before it came to fruition. Obaidul Hassan submitted his resignation letter to the President of Bangladesh in the afternoon of 10 August 2024.[4]

Aftermath

edit

Following the resignation of Obaidul, Syed Refaat Ahmed was appointed as the chief justice of the People's Republic of Bangladesh by the President of Bangladesh in 10th August 2024.[5][6]
