Ashneer Grover is an Indian entrepreneur, investor, author, and television personality, best known as the co-founder and former managing director of the fintech company BharatPe.[1] He later became a national figure through his appearance as an investor on the first season of Shark Tank India, and he currently runs the venture platform Third Unicorn.[2]
Early life and education
[edit]Ashneer Grover was born on 14 June 1982 in New Delhi.[3] He completed a B.Tech in civil engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi, where he was chosen as one of six students selected for an overseas exchange program at INSA Lyon in France, supported by a scholarship from the French Embassy.[4] He went on to complete an MBA in finance at the Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad in 2006.[4]
Career
[edit]Ashneer began his career in finance rather than entrepreneurship. He spent around seven years at Kotak Investment Banking before moving to American Express, then took his first operational role as chief financial officer at Grofers (now Blinkit) between 2015 and 2017, followed by a stint as head of new business at PC Jeweller.[4]
In 2018, Grover co-founded BharatPe with Shashvat Nakrani, building a QR-code based payment platform aimed at small and medium merchants across India.[1] Under his leadership as managing director, BharatPe expanded quickly into merchant loans, insurance, and other financial products, and was widely covered as one of India's prominent fintech unicorns.[1]
BharatPe exit
[edit]In early 2022, BharatPe's board initiated a governance review following allegations of financial irregularities, after an audio clip involving Grover and his wife, Madhuri Jain Grover, circulated publicly.[5] Grover resigned as managing director and board director on 28 February 2022, shortly after the agenda for a board meeting on a PwC audit report was shared with him.[6] The dispute led to multiple legal proceedings between Grover and BharatPe, which were ultimately settled in September 2024, closing out his formal association with the company.[3]
Shark Tank India
[edit]Ashneer Grover appeared as one of seven investors on the first season of Shark Tank India, which aired on Sony from December 2021 to February 2022.[2] He was reported as the second-highest investor of the season, committing close to ₹2.95 crore across 11 deals, and became known for his blunt, direct style on the show.[7][8] He did not return for subsequent seasons, and BharatPe's controversy is widely cited as the reason he stepped away.[2] He returned to television in September 2025 to host the reality series Rise and Fall on Amazon MX Player.[9]
Third Unicorn and later ventures
[edit]After exiting BharatPe, Ashneer Grover founded Third Unicorn, a platform for building new consumer and fintech ventures.[10] Products launched under it have included ZeroPe, a short-term medical loans platform, and CrickPe, a fantasy sports app that was shut down in 2024 amid regulatory pressure on real-money gaming apps in India.[11][12] Grover has also continued to invest personally in startups across fintech, logistics, and consumer sectors.[10]
In 2025, Ashneer Grover's name surfaced in media coverage of the BluSmart-Gensol financial matter after regulatory filings referenced fund flows connected to Third Unicorn.[13] Grover has publicly described himself as an investor rather than an operational party in the matter and has said he is cooperating with authorities.[13]

[edit]Grover authored Doglapan: The Hard Truth About Life and Start-Ups, published by Penguin Business in December 2022.[14] The book draws on his own career and the BharatPe episode to offer a candid take on Indian startup culture.[14]
