ATOMIC THEATRE is a Miami-based electronica/dark ambient/avant-garde jazz ensemble.
History
editATOMIC THEATRE was formed in 2020, during the height of the COVID-19 global pandemic. The concept for the ensemble grew out of a previous jazz ensemble rehearsing in Westchester, a suburb of Miami-Dade County. Daniel Medina was the drummer and percussionist, and Mario Cesar Del Risco was the pianist and keyboardist. After the group disbanded due to incongruent views regarding musical direction for the ensemble, they remained in contact and agreed to future collaborations. In July 2023, after several aborted attempts to collaborate, ATOMIC THEATRE recorded SILENCE, their first live, one-take, fully improvised EP, at the Shack North in Hialeah Gardens. The EP was released by Republic Records, Daniel Medina's independent record label, in August of the same year.
Previous solo recordings by Daniel Medina under his name and under ATOMIC THEATRE were released in 2021 and 2022. Several of those recordings were remastered by Daniel Medina in the summer of 2023 and subsequently re-released as remastered recordings and as part of ATOMIC THEATRE's catalog on all major music platforms, including Spotify, Apple Music, and Soundcloud.
ATOMIC THEATRE has started to play live shows, or recitals, as they refer to the live performance art shows. Libraries, indie book stores, galleries, and museums are the main venues where they perform, inspired by the concept performances of GRAY, Cabaret Voltaire, The Kilimanjaro Darkjazz Ensemble, and Laurie Anderson.
