The Top 100 Egyptian Comedy Films is a list unveiled during the 38th edition of the Alexandria International Film Festival in September 2022, in collaboration with the Egyptian Critics Association. The list features comedic films produced from the early years of Egyptian cinema up to the time of the festival. However, the selection has sparked substantial criticism, with critics noting the omission of several comedy films.
The selection process for the Top 100 Egyptian Comedy Films involved 32 film critics and researchers, drawn from an initial pool of approximately 450 Egyptian comedy films. The voting process was conducted in multiple stages. First, a group of five cinema experts reviewed the preliminary list.[1]
Ballots were then distributed to participants, who were allotted ample time to watch the films.[2] The voting period lasted 120 days and was supervised by critic Ahmed Shawky, who also participated in the selection. Notable figures involved in the voting included director Amir Ramses, screenwriter Haitham Dabbour, and film critics such as Magda Khairallah, Kamal Ramzi, and Amir Abaza.
The results of the Top 100 Egyptian Comedy Films list were announced in early September 2022 by film critic Amir Abaza, who is the president of the Alexandria Mediterranean Countries Film Festival and head of the Egyptian Critics Association.[3]
The "Top 100 Egyptian Comedy Films" list faced criticism following its announcement, notably for the exclusion of several films deemed significant comedies, including The Kit Kat and February's Black. Critics also pointed out the absence of films regarded as landmarks in comedic cinema, such as Gabi Menhu Fih, I want my right, Raya and Skina, and Al-Uns Station. In response to the backlash, film critic Mahmoud Abdel Shakour remarked, "Disagreement over the results is a natural occurrence, and whatever the outcome, it will not satisfy all tastes."
Critics noted the absence of any films featuring Mohamed Sobhi from the list. In response, critic Ahmed Saad explained that Sobhi's popularity was more prominent in theater than in cinema.[4]
Ahmed Saad expressed surprise at the inclusion of dramatic films, such as 'Attention, gentlemen', in the list. In response, critic Ahmed Shawky, who oversaw the survey, remarked, "The higher the value of the film, the more it transcends categorization." Additionally, critic Magda Morris announced that a book would be published, providing an analysis of the results, offering critical perspectives on the winning films, and addressing public inquiries.[1]

The list recognized several prominent actors and filmmakers, with Adel Imam awarded Best Actor, Shwikar named Best Actress, Fatin Abdel Wahab honored as Best Director, and Abo El Seoud El Ebiary recognized as Best Writer. The award for Best Supporting Actor was jointly awarded to Riyad Al-Qasbaji and Hussein Ismail.
The list prominently featured several comedic actors, including Adel Imam with 18 films, Fouad El-Mohandes with 11 films, Samir Ghanem with 9 films, and Ismail Yasin with 7 films. Other notable names included the duo Hisham Magd and Chico, each recognized for 4 films, alongside Mohamed Henedi, who also appeared in 4 films and had a more extensive cinematic career preceding them.[2]
