DBT Aero is a United States aerospace design and manufacturing company headquartered in Salt Lake City, Utah, focused on developing ultra‑efficient fixed‑wing aircraft based on a patented “Double Box Tail” (DBT) configuration. The company originates from work on the Synergy double‑box‑tail concept and is developing a family of personal, training, and regional aircraft built around this configuration.[1]

History

The Double Box Tail configuration traces back to the Synergy concept developed by John McGinnis, which gained public attention in the early 2010s for its box‑tail layout and efficiency claims. DBT Aero was subsequently created as a separate corporate vehicle to refine, patent, and commercialize the Double Box Tail concept for certified production aircraft, including personal and regional platforms.

DBT Aero was founded in 2019 following the acquisition and further development of the Synergy Aircraft concept, which introduced a patented “Double Boxtail” configuration in the early 2010s. The company’s roadmap extends from a two‑seat general aviation aircraft to larger regional concepts, with design goals that include higher aerodynamic efficiency, lower fuel burn, and reduced noise compared with conventional aircraft.[2]

As the company has matured, its leadership and advisory ranks have expanded to include aerospace and airline professionals with prior experience at major organizations such as large aircraft manufacturers, airlines, and advanced air‑mobility ventures, brought in to support certification, industrialization, and market entry of the DBT 2LX and follow‑on aircraft.[3]

Aircraft design

DBT Aero’s designs are based on a Double Box Tail configuration that combines horizontal tail and wing surfaces into a closed‑box structural arrangement, a layout related to closed‑wing or box‑wing concepts. The company states that this configuration is intended to increase lift, reduce induced drag, and improve stability and control, with claimed improvements in lift and fuel efficiency compared with conventional tail and wing arrangements.[4]

The airframes under development use primarily carbon‑fiber composite construction and are designed to maintain extensive laminar flow over lifting and fuselage surfaces to improve lift‑to‑drag ratio and reduce fuel consumption. DBT Aero positions this configuration as a platform for future low‑emissions or net‑zero‑carbon aircraft concepts aimed at personal, business, and regional air mobility markets.[5]

DBT 2LX

The DBT 2LX is the company’s initial production program, a two‑seat, side‑by‑side aircraft intended for personal use, advanced training, and fleet operations for flight schools and clubs. The model is being developed for certification under the FAA’s MOSAIC light aircraft framework, and the company plans both factory‑built “ready‑to‑fly” aircraft and kit versions.[6]

The DBT 2LX incorporates a lightweight carbon‑fiber airframe, Double Box Tail configuration, and a laminar‑flow fuselage, with projected performance including a cruise speed of more than 200 knots, a range of about 1,000 nautical miles, and a useful load approaching 800 lb. In late 2023, DBT Aero reported that its Double Box Tail proof‑of‑concept aircraft received a Special Airworthiness Certificate in the Experimental category from the FAA, clearing the way for manned flight testing as part of the program’s development.[7]

Industry partnerships and support

DBT Aero reports broad backing from aerospace suppliers and engineering firms through letters of support and partnership agreements. Companies that have publicly expressed support for the Double Box Tail technology and the DBT 2LX program include Hexcel, Nammo Composite Solutions, Composites Universal Group, Prefix Corporation, M4 Engineering, Duxion Motors, and several other composites, engineering, and operations partners.[8]

These partners contribute to or support activities such as composite structures, aerodynamic and structural analysis, prototyping, and planning for certification and production, and have cited potential advantages of the Double Box Tail architecture in drag reduction, lift generation, and overall flight stability.[9]
