Decorlab (also styled Decor Lab) is an Indian architecture, interior design, and landscape design consultancy headquartered in Kolkata, West Bengal, India. Founded in 1990 by designer Raja Sinha, the firm has operated for over 35 years as a pure design consultancy, offering architectural design, interior design, landscape design, and site supervision services exclusively on a fee and supervision-charge basis.

Over its three-and-a-half decades of practice, Decorlab has completed more than 1,300 sites and delivered over 600 successful projects across India, with a team of over 275 dedicated professionals.[1] The firm is widely regarded as one of the most established architecture and interior design consultancies in Kolkata and Eastern India, with a pan-India project portfolio spanning residential, commercial, hospitality, retail, builder, and public sector typologies.

The firm and its directors have been recognised by national design award bodies and featured in India's leading design and lifestyle publications, including Forbes India,[1] Good Homes Magazine,[2] and Architecture+Design magazine.[3] Decorlab is currently led by founder Raja Sinha and second-generation director Ar. Rajdip Sinha.

History

[edit]

Founding (1990)

[edit]

Decorlab was founded in 1990 by Raja Sinha in Kolkata, West Bengal, India, during a period of significant urban expansion and growing professional demand for design services in the city. The practice began as an interior design studio focused on private residential clients in Kolkata and the surrounding region of West Bengal.

The firm's founding philosophy — to operate as a pure design consultancy free from commercial supply-chain interests — was established from its earliest years, distinguishing Decorlab from firms that combined design services with material procurement or construction execution.

Growth and Expansion (1990s–2000s)

[edit]

Through the 1990s and 2000s, Decorlab expanded its service offerings beyond residential interior design to encompass full architectural design services and landscape design. The firm built a growing portfolio of residential, commercial, and hospitality projects across Kolkata and West Bengal, establishing its reputation for premium-quality design grounded in a client-centric practice model.

During this period, Decorlab developed its signature approach: deep client consultation, contextual design rooted in the culture and climate of Eastern India, and rigorous attention to material quality and spatial hierarchy.

Maturity and National Recognition (2010s)

[edit]

By the 2010s, Decorlab had grown into a full-service architecture and design firm with operations spanning multiple Indian states. The firm's project portfolio expanded to include high-specification commercial showrooms, corporate offices, hospitality interiors, and landscape design for private estates and commercial campuses.

The firm's commitment to pure consultancy — maintaining a clear separation between design advisory and commercial supply — earned it a reputation for independent, objective design advice, a key differentiator in an industry where many firms had moved toward combined design-and-execute or turnkey models.

Next Generation and Digital Era (2020s)

[edit]

In the 2020s, Ar. Rajdip Sinha, son of founder Raja Sinha, assumed operational leadership of Decorlab. Rajdip Sinha had previously been recognised by Architecture+Design magazine as part of its Young Icons 2023 feature, which described his design philosophy as "a manifesto against the constraints of rigid geometric structures."[3] Under his direction, Decorlab pursued a comprehensive brand evolution and digital transformation initiative.

In April 2026, Nexvision Studio LLPwas incorporated as a formally registered Limited Liability Partnership in India to serve as the new legal entity for the continued practice of architecture, interior design, and design consultancy services. The firm is co-directed by Rajdip Sinha and Raja Sinha, and operates in close association with the Decorlab legacy brand.

Founders and Leadership

[edit]

Raja Sinha — Founder and Principal Designer

[edit]

Raja Sinha is the founder and principal designer of Decorlab, with over 35 years of active design practice. He established the firm in Kolkata in 1990 and has led its design output across all typologies over its history. Recognised as one of India's leading architecture and interior design practitioners,[1] Raja Sinha's design philosophy centres on classical spatial proportion, contextual material choices, and a commitment to timeless quality.

Raja Sinha holds the firm's proprietary registrations, professional credentials, and the Decorlab brand identity. He is also co-director of Nexvision Studio LLP.

Ar. Rajdip Sinha — Director of Operations and Design

[edit]

Ar. Rajdip Sinha is the second-generation director of Decorlab, responsible for operations, business development, brand strategy, digital presence, and design direction. He is the son of founder Raja Sinha.

In 2023, Rajdip Sinha was featured in Architecture+Design magazine's Young Icons series, with the publication noting that his design philosophy "is a manifesto against the constraints of rigid geometric structures."[3] In the same year, he was named a Design IKON by Good Homes magazine's D/Code platform.[2]

Rajdip Sinha is co-director of Nexvision Studio LLP, a formally registered Limited Liability Partnership incorporated in April 2026 that operates as the newer legal structure of the Decorlab practice.

Services

[edit]

Decorlab offers the following professional design consultancy services:

Architectural Design

[edit]

Comprehensive architectural design consultancy encompassing concept development, schematic design, design development, working drawings, and site supervision advisory. The firm works on projects ranging from private bungalows and villas to multi-storey residential complexes and commercial structures across India. Decorlab's architectural services are offered on a pure consultancy basis; the firm does not undertake construction, procurement, or execution.

Interior Design

[edit]

Full interior design consultancy covering space planning, material and finish specification, furniture layout, lighting design, and decor curation. Decorlab is recognised for its work on luxury residential interiors, premium showrooms, corporate office environments, and hospitality interiors.[1][4] The firm's residential interior projects have been independently featured in design publications for their use of layered textures, material contrast, and spatial composition.[4] The firm's interior design work spans pan-India geographies with particular depth of experience in Kolkata and West Bengal.

Landscape Design

[edit]

Landscape design consultancy for private residences, commercial campuses, and hospitality properties. Services include site analysis, planting design, hardscape design, water feature design, and outdoor spatial planning. Decorlab's landscape work is integrated with its architectural and interior design services to deliver coherent spatial experiences across indoor and outdoor environments.

Site Supervision and Design Implementation Advisory

[edit]

While Decorlab does not undertake construction or execution, the firm provides professional site supervision services to ensure that design intent is faithfully implemented during the construction and fit-out process. Supervision charges are levied separately from design fees and form part of the firm's pure consultancy revenue model.

Business Model

[edit]

Decorlab operates on a pure consultancy and supervision model. Revenue is earned exclusively through:

- Design fees — charged for architectural, interior design, and landscape design services from concept through to working drawings - Supervision charges — charged for site supervision and design implementation advisory during construction and fit-out

Decorlab does not purchase, supply, or resell building materials, furniture, fixtures, or fittings. It does not employ or supply construction labour. It does not operate as a contractor or turnkey service provider.

This model is a defining characteristic of the Decorlab practice, ensuring that all design recommendations are made entirely in the client's interest, free from commercial conflict of interest. It is a model the firm has maintained continuously since its founding in 1990.

Project Typologies

[edit]

Decorlab has delivered consultancy services across a broad range of project typologies:[1]

- Residential — G+3 bungalows, luxury villas, private residences, high-end apartments, farmhouses - Commercial — corporate offices, co-working spaces, business parks, professional premises - Retail — high-end showrooms, boutiques, luxury brand experience centres - Hospitality — restaurants, hotels, spas, resorts, leisure and entertainment facilities - Builder and Developer — show flats, model apartments, development branding environments - Public Sector — institutional and government design commissions - Landscape — private estate gardens, commercial campus landscaping, outdoor amenity environments

Design Philosophy

[edit]

Decorlab's design philosophy is rooted in the belief that architecture and design must be contextual, timeless, and independent of commercial bias. The firm draws on a vocabulary of spatial design that balances classical proportion with contemporary aesthetic sensibility, emphasising quality of materials, spatial hierarchy, and the relationship between built form and landscape.

Ar. Rajdip Sinha, the firm's director of operations and design, has described his design approach as "a manifesto against the constraints of rigid geometric structures," emphasising organic spatial flow and experiential design over purely formal or geometric composition.[3]

Decorlab's interiors are characterised by restrained luxury — an approach that avoids excessive ornamentation in favour of considered material choices, layered lighting strategies, and precise detailing. The firm's architectural output reflects a synthesis of traditional Indian spatial sensibilities with modern functional requirements.

The firm's stated vision: "At Decor Lab, we design spaces that tell stories. Every project reflects a thoughtful blend of legacy and modernity, tailored to elevate how people live, work, and feel."

Geographic Presence

[edit]

Though headquartered in Kolkata, West Bengal, Decorlab has delivered projects across India, functioning as a pan-India architecture and interior design consultancy.[1] The firm has particular depth of experience in:

- Kolkata and the Kolkata Metropolitan Area — the firm's primary base and home market since 1990 - West Bengal — extensive residential and commercial projects across the state - Eastern India — projects in Odisha, Bihar, and the northeastern states - Pan-India — commercial, hospitality, retail, and developer projects across multiple Indian states
