The Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences is one of the 18 departments of the University of Pavia, Italy, which is part of the university's Mathematical, Physical and Natural Sciences area (in the italian academic system corresponds to the former faculty of “Scienze MM.FF.NN.”) chaired by Prof. Silvio Seno since October 1st 2024.[1].

Overview
editThe department's research spans from Earth[2][3] and Planetary[4][5][6][7] sciences to the natural sciences including zoology[8], ecology[9] and plant biology[10]. The research groups integrates skills and knowledge from the different disciplines to provide a comprehensive view of the environmental system as a whole[11][12][13][14][15][16][17]. The department is located in part at the Earth Sciences building on in the Science Area “la nave” (the ship) and in part near by the Botanic Garden building in the city center of Pavia.
Organization
editDegrees
editThe Department hosts 2 undergraduate degree programme, 3 Master's degree programme and 1 PhD programme. All the bachelor and master courses are interdisciplinary and quantitative, with a major research project in the last year[18][19].
- Undergraduate degree programme in Earth Sciences (leading to a 3-year BA in Geology, L-34) with approximately 120 undergraduates.
- Undergraduate degree programme in Natural Sciences and Technologies (leading to a 3-year BA in Natural Sciences, L-32)
- Master degree programme in Geosciences for sustainable development (leading to a 2-years MSc in Earth Sciences, LM-74)
- Master degree programme in Conservation of biodiversity teaching and scientific communication (leading to a 2-years MSc in Natural Sciences, LM-60)
- Agri-food Sustainability (leading to a 2-years MSc in Agricultural Sciences and technologies, LM-69)[20]
- PhD programme in Earth Science and Environmental Sciences[21].
Facilities
editThe department hosts several state of the art laboratories, the museum of mineralogy[22][23], the museum of paleontology, the 250 years old botanic garden[24] (est. 1774[25]) that are part of the university museums system. The department of Earth and Environmental Sciences also manages the Riserva naturale Bosco Siro Negri.
History
editThe Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences as it is today was established in 2011 from the merger of the Departments of Earth Sciences, Territorial Ecology and the Animal Biology Section.
Department of Earth Sciences
editThe Department of Earth Sciences of the University of Pavia, was established in 1982 following the merger of the pre-existing Institutes of Geology, Paleontology and Mineralogy[26]
Both the Institute of Geology and the Institute of Mineralogy have in practice begun to function (albeit with different names: cabinet, office, etc.) starting from 1887, after the chair of Mineralogy and Geology, held by Torquato Taramelli[27] since 1875 was doubled in 1883 with the establishment of that of Mineralogy entrusted to Francesco Sanson. Before Prof. Torquato Taramelli the teaching was carried out by Prof. Leopoldo Maggi, who succeeded in 1863 to Antonio Stoppani for that of Geology and to Giuseppe Balsamo Crivelli for that of Mineralogy[28][29]
After a decade from the establishment, in the autumn of 1993, part of the department (the institute of geology and paleontology) was moved from Corso Carlo Alberto in the historic buildings of the central University to the more modern buildings of Via Agostino Bassi (Polo Scientifico Cravino) to join the institute of mineralogy (already there since the 1930s).
