Dominic A. Murray | |

Died | October 5th, 2009 |
Education | Farmingdale State College |
Dominic A. Murray was a student and basketball player at Farmingdale State College who collapsed and died during a basketball game due to sudden cardiac arrest on October 5th, 2009.[1] This was caused by a congenital heart defect that wasn't recognized until it was too late.[1] He died at the age of 17, having only spent 7 weeks in college.[2] Those who surrounded him at the time of his death did not recognize the signs of cardiac arrest, leaving them unable to help him. Dominic collapsed during the game and was said to be experiencing seizure like symptoms, such as gasping, gurgling, and seizure-like motions. His death brought changes to New York State law, resulting in the New York State Senate establishing the Dominic Murray Sudden Cardiac Arrest Prevention Act,[3] which aims to prevent the events that happened to Dominic from happening to others.
