Introduction

edit

Abeer Isa Alkobaisi (born April 1972) is a Bahraini plastic surgeon who is recognized as one of the first female plastic surgeons in the Gulf region. Throughout her career, she has contributed to the field of plastic and reconstructive surgery, establishing herself as a leading figure in the region’s medical community.

Early Life and Education

edit

Abeer Alkobaisi was born in Bahrain in April 1972. Although she initially pursued engineering at her father’s suggestion, she later decided to follow her passion for medicine. After two weeks in engineering studies, she transitioned to medical school at Arabian Gulf University (AGU) in Bahrain, where she completed her studies from 1990 to 1996. She studied at Henri Mondor Hospital with Professor Mimoun and Professor Lantieri, two of the top plastic surgeons in France.

After earning her medical degree, Alkobaisi pursued further specialization in surgery at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI) between 2000 and 2003. She later continued her training in plastic surgery at renowned institutions in Paris, completing her specialization from 2003 to 2007. During this period, she also balanced her professional development with raising three children.

Influences and Early Career

edit

Alkobaisi 's interest in plastic surgery was further deepened when she witnessed the world’s first partial face transplant[1][2], which took place in Amiens, France, in 2005. The surgery, led by Dr. Bernard Devauchelle and Dr. Jean-Michel Dubernard, involved reconstructive surgery on Isabelle Dinoire[3], who had suffered severe facial injuries. This groundbreaking procedure inspired Alkobaisi to specialize in plastic and reconstructive surgery.

Her early professional career began at Saad Specialist Hospital in Saudi Arabia, where she worked as a consultant plastic surgeon from 2007 to 2009. Despite the initial challenges she faced, including resistance from the military hospital in Bahrain, her time at Saad Specialist Hospital helped establish her reputation as one of the few female plastic surgeons in the Gulf, a region where conservative cultural values often limited women’s professional opportunities.

In 2009, Alkobaisi returned to Bahrain to balance her career and family life, taking a temporary position at Bahrain Specialist Hospital[4] (BSH). She also began planning the launch of her own private clinic.

Establishing Her Practice

edit

With support from her father, Isa Mubrak Alkobaisi, who was her first investor, Abeer opened her own plastic surgery clinic in Bahrain. She spent six months preparing the clinic, obtaining necessary medical certifications, and securing a suitable location. The clinic started with minimal facilities, including a consultation room, a procedure room, and a small staff. Abeer's father’s financial support played a crucial role in the successful opening of the clinic.

Over time, the clinic gained recognition, particularly among Saudi clients who frequently visited Bahrain for leisure[5]. This growing demand for cosmetic procedures in the region, combined with word-of-mouth referrals and the rise of social media, contributed to the expansion of her practice.

Expansion and Continued Success

edit

In 2014, as the demand for plastic surgery and cosmetic care continued to rise, Alkobaisi expanded her practice by opening a second clinic in Dubai, United Arab Emirates[6][7]. This expansion reflected the growing popularity of cosmetic surgery in the Gulf region, driven by increased tourism and the influence of social media on beauty standards.

Abeer Isa Alkobaisi's career is marked by her pioneering role[8] as one of the first female plastic surgeons in the Gulf[9] and her continued contributions to the field of plastic surgery in the region. Through her clinics and professional work, she has become an influential figure in Gulf healthcare, particularly in the field of cosmetic surgery.
