El Gato is an upcoming American television series created by Eric Carrasco, directed by Robert Rodriguez and based in the comic series El Gato Negro, created in 1993 by Richard Dominguez. The show is starring by Diego Boneta as El Gato Negro with Sarah Jones, Lorenza Izzo, Eric Lange, Angela Sarafyan, Alfonso Dosal, Julio Cesar Cedillo, Alejandro Edda and Adriana Barraza as supporting characters.[1]

The series will be produced by MGM Television and distribuited by Amazon Prime Video.

Plot

Based on the comic series El Gato Negro by Richard Dominguez, El Gato follows Frank Guerrero (Boneta), who returns home to Mexico after the death of his father and finds himself neck-deep in a nest of vipers – his estranged family – who are vying for control of his father’s business empire. But Frank’s grief is interrupted when he learns his only inheritance, a seemingly worthless parcel of land on the border, sits atop the lair of a famous costumed vigilante — his father, “El Gato.” Now, Frank is in the crosshairs. To survive, he’ll have to solve mysteries decades in the making and unravel the truth about his father’s connections to a modern-day terror plot.[2][1]

  • Alfonso Dosal as Alejandro "Alex" Guerrero; A cruel Oxford executive and director of a multimillion-dollar agricultural company, he is Frank's ambitious nephew who was once like his brother.[3]
  • Angela Sarafyan as Elisa Kazanjian; A cold former CIA agent with a traumatic past. She works in Mexico City investigating the criminal past of agricultural billionaire Gabriel Guerrero.[4]

Julio Cesar Cedillo, Alejandro Edda and Paulina Gaitán[5] has been cast in secret roles.[6]

In February 2019, Deadline Hollywood' reported that MGM Television is developing a El Gato Negro television series, with Mexican actor Diego Boneta starring and executive producing the series through his production company Three Amigos, and with Joel Novoa as co-executive producer. In September 2019, Robert Rodriguez joined the project to direct and executive produce, with the series originally slated for Apple TV+.[7] British-born entrepreneur Mark Burnett along with Americans Steve Stark, Kai Dolbashian, American-born Venezuelan Joel Novoa-Schneider and Mexico's Marilú G. Carranza will serve as executive producers of the series. The creator of the original comic book, Richard Domínguez, owner of Azteca Productions, granted the rights and permissions for the use of his characters.

Casting

Actress Lorenza Izzo joined the cast in May 2024.[8] In February 2024, Amazon Prime Video (which owns MGM) greenlit the series, now titled El Gato, for production in spring 2024. [9] On June 11 Sarah Jones and Adriana Barraza joined the cast as Ashley and Alma, respectively.[2] On June 20 Eric Lange and Alfonso Dosal joined to the cast. On June 28 Angela Sarafyan joins the cast.[4] July 23 actors Alejandro Edda and Julio Cesar Cedillo were cast in the project.[6]

Filming

The filming started the June 24, 2024 in Mexico City, Mexico.[10][11]
