The Cause Lies Within Me. (原因は自分にある。; Genin wa Jibun ni Aru.), commonly abbreviated as GNJB or Genjibu, is a avant-garde group formed on August 14, 2018 under Stardust Records as part of the EBiDAN branch. Formerly known as BATTLE STREET, on August 7, 2019, they changed their name[1] and adopted a new concept for the group.

The group consists of seven members: Takato Okura, Kohaku Koizumi, Masaya Sakuragi, Royota Nagano, Jun Muto, Kazuto Mokudai, and Kaname Yoshizawa.[2] Their debut single "Genin wa Jibun ni Aru." was released on October 9, 2019.

Formation

The group was formed through a collaboration between Stardust Records and HMV, through a project called "BATTLE STREET" [3] that was to launch a street-style unit among members of BATTLE BOYS, a selection project for EBiDAN trainees nationwide who were active in the Kanto region.[4] Members were selected by management based on fan votes that best suited the new group from each area. On July 7, 2019, the group announced their official debut as a unit at the BATTLE BOYS live show "BATTLE BOYS LIVE 2019 ~DREAMS COME TRUE~",[5] and one month later changed their name to "The Cause Lies Within Me." [6] Their official fanclub name is "Observer" (感触者; Kansokusha).

The group takes the word "cause", —to be the source of something, a certain state, or phenomenon— and gives it a positive connotation where they focus on expressing their desire to generate new ideas and creations in the world,[7] as if to say, "The cause lies within me." Their music presents a unique style that combines the genres of vocaloid, J-POP, Japanese rock, hip-hop, and more. [8] Since debuting, the group has received musical contributions from notable figures in the contemporary J-pop scene, including Ayase from YOASOBI.
