Early Life

edit

Gio Antonio Canto Gómez, known professionally as Gio Canto, was born on 25 January 2009 in Mexico City, Mexico. He was raised in Chilpancingo, Guerrero, where his mother nurtured his early interest in storytelling by reading bedtime stories to him. This familial tradition sparked his imagination and inspired him to create his own narratives.[1]

During his first year of secondary school, a Spanish class assignment required students to write a story. Canto's teacher was impressed with his work and encouraged him to pursue publication[2]. At the age of 13, he self-published his debut novel, El Diario de un Soldado de Filas Rojas Mexicanas, in April 2022.

Career

edit

Gio Canto began his literary career in 2022 with the publication of his debut novel, El Diario de un Soldado de Filas Rojas Mexicanas, which he released through his own publishing imprint, Gio Canto Books. The book marked his initial entry into writing and publishing.[3]

In 2023, he published The Red Casino, his second novel and his first written in English. Later that year, he released Solo en Este Mundo, the first instalment in a series titled "Entre Dimensiones."[4] His works primarily explore themes of fiction and speculative storytelling, targeting a young adult audience.

In December 2024, at the age of 15, Canto presented his fourth novel, Dies Irae, at the Guadalajara International Book Fair (FIL). He was among the youngest participants in that year's event[2]. The novel, set in Mexico City, features a narrative that combines apocalyptic themes with personal challenges.

Gio Canto is also the founder of Gio Canto Books[5], a publishing house through which he manages the release of his works.

In 2024, Gio Canto authored an article titled "La IA en el mundo editorial: ¿un reemplazo o una ayuda?"[6], which was published on the open-access platform Zenodo

Recognition and Impact

edit

Local publications such as El Sol de Acapulco and El Occidental covered his achievements, bringing visibility to his efforts in the literary community.

Gio founded his own publishing imprint, Gio Canto Books, at the age of 13. The company not only serves as the platform for his self-published works but also reflects his entrepreneurial approach to the publishing industry. Through Gio Canto Books, he has expressed an interest in supporting emerging authors in the future[5]

Controversies

edit

In December 2024, Gio Canto reported that the Guerrero State Secretariat of Culture declined to provide financial assistance for his participation in the Guadalajara International Book Fair (FIL). He required approximately 60,000 pesos to cover expenses such as printing his book Dies Irae, as well as travel and accommodation costs for the event. Canto expressed disappointment over the lack of support from cultural authorities, highlighting the challenges faced by emerging authors in securing institutional backing[7][8][9]
