Legend
editAs per Hindu legend, the presiding deity in the form of Linga (an iconic form of Shiva) was erected and worshipped by ParashuRama.
Mahashivaratri is the main festival celebrated here.
History
editThere are no inscriptional evidence about this temple but the architecture and the sculptures resembes the temple dates back to the 10th to 12th century CE.
Architecture
editThe temple complex covers 1 acre and built in Western Chalukyan style, the sanctum sanctorum faced to west. There were beautiful sculptures of Shringi and Bringi as dwara palakas(Gate Keepers) in side the ardha mandapa but were broken, so that they have been removed and kept outside. An another set of new statues of Shringi and bringi have been erected in the place of old once but are not to upto the mark of old once.
Beautifully carved sculptures of Keshava and Adi Varaha are there left and right sides of the outside of the sanctum sanctorum, the two hands of the Chennakeshava sculpture were damaged. An another beautiful sculpture is of Nandi which is well ornamented and placed middle of the maha mandapa(Main Hall).
Sculpture of Brahma with three heads visible and with broken four arms but with visible sruk(A device of Brahma used in Yagna) is fixed to the north side of the Temple.Ganesha and Bhairava statues are there to the east and south sides of the walls of the temple.
There is another small shrine located immediately northeastern side of the temple which is dedicated to the goddess Annapurna, consort of the lord shiva. But the statue of the deity has no properties of goddess Annapurna, this indicates that the statue may belongs to some another deity but mistakenly worshiping as Annapurna.Decoration and ornamentation to the statue makes it impossible to see the original one unless the priest removes the decoration.
There are another beautifully carved sculptures of Umaalingana Murthy(Uma+Alingana) and Thandava Shiva. Umaalingana murthy seated on his mount Nandi with broken hands and legs and small sculptures of Ganesha and Karthikeya are there both sides. The Thandava Shiva sculpture with broken hands and legs also accompanied by small statues of dancing Ganesha and Karthikeya.
There are many other sculptures which are beautifully carved and belongs to ancient period were thrown outside of the temple with carelessness.
Administration
editThe temple is maintained and administered by government of Telangana.
Festivals and rituals
editMaha Shivaratri is the most important festival here, along with Dasara Sarannavartrulu.
