Lifeline Foundation is a Vadodara based nonprofit organisation that works at the cross-sector of emergency medical services, highway trauma care, occupational health and bystander emergency preparedness, training and education.[1] The foundation was established in 2002 by husband and wife Dr Subroto Das and Sushmita Das, following a life-threatening road traffic accident.[2]
Highway Rescue Project

The Highway Rescue Project was Lifeline Foundation's first initiative in the emergency medical services and pre-hospital emergency trauma care sector.
Having survived a major road traffic accident with delayed bystander intervention and profound trauma, the founders began integrating available resources and created a network of ambulances, cranes, metal cutters, hospitals and blood banks across the national and state highways. The foundation established a 24-hour control room for victims or bystanders to call. And in 2002, launched India's first Accident Helpline Services across 263 kilometres of National Highway 8 (India, old numbering) between Ahmedabad and Surat in the state of Gujarat.[3]
A TED (conference) hosted by the Indian Institute of Management Ranchi invited Dr Subroto Das to deliver a TED talk on 'Highway Accident Rescue'.[4]
For services to the field of healthcare and medicine through his foundation, co-founder Das was conferred with the Padma Shri award in 2017 by then President of India, Shri Pranab Mukherjee.[5][6]
Organisational Impact
editAn impact assessment study conducted by the Tata Institute of Social Sciences and Axis Bank Foundation in 2015 and released by then Union Minister of State for Finance Jayant Sinha[7] reported that: "Lifeline Foundation's endeavours to highway accident rescue have contributed to the transformation of the EMS scenario in the country. It has holistically looked at efficiently utilising existing healthcare infrastructure whilst networking and training emergency rescue departments and personnel. LLF (Lifeline Foundation) has been responsible to develop and implement a comprehensive highway rescue response model that was one of the models used as a template to design EMS services in India. Gujarat is the first and only state in the country to have successfully passed the Emergency Medical Services legislation in 2007 thanks to the catalytic role played by LLF (Lifeline Foundation)".[8]

- Sony Television invited Dr Subroto Das and profiled the Foundation's work on Kaun Banega Crorepati hosted by Shri Amitabh Bachchan in 2017.[9][10]
- Padma Shri was awarded to founder, Dr Subroto Das by former President of India, Shri Pranab Mukherjee in 2017.[5][6][11][12]
- Reliance Industries and CNN-IBN Real Heroes Award was conferred to Dr Subroto Das and Sushmita Das in 2008.[13]
