Manoj Kumar (born 1979) hails from Morkheri (a small town in Rohtak city of Haryana).He is a former Indian sports shooter. He is currently the Chief Coach of the Indian 50M rifle shooting team. He is also the high performance coach for the Indian shooting team. He has an experience of around 15 years as a coach and has continued to contribute to the Indian shooting team's splendid performances.
Early life
editHe was born to father Lt. Shri Mahabir Singh( a subedar in Indian army) and mother SMT Chandkaur.
At an early age of 18 he joined Indian navy, where his shooting career started and he was given the opportunity to represent navy in shooting sports and later represent India at international competitions.
Shooting career
editAfter 3 years of practice,in 1999 he was selected in the Indian team (junior).
He made his first international debt in 2005. During the commonwealth shooting championships held at [[Melbourne]; he won the gold medal with Gagan Narang.He in the same year,also won a gold medal in the 2005 Asian Airgun Championship held in Bangkok.
In 2006 he won 2 gold medals and 1 silver medal in the 2006 South Asian Games- Colombo. He has participated in 4 issf world cups[1]
In 2008 he was recognised with the Bhim Award which is the highest sports honour of Haryana.[2]
Career as a Coach
editManoj Kumar took retirement from the Indian Navy in 2011. After which the Indian Airforce approached him to be the coach of the air force team which he gladly accepted. The Indian Air force shooting team began getting splendid results under Manoj's coaching because of which he was later approached and appointed as a coach by the National Rifle association of India.
Till date he has coached many shooters who have represented India at international levels as well as the Olympics including Olympian Deepak Kumar (sport shooter),Ravi Kumar (sport shooter),kajal Saini (who is from Manoj's home town and bagged a gold and a bronze in the South Asian championship 2019[3]) Manini Kaushik, Nischal (who also broke the National record recently.[4])
In 2023 when joydeep karmaker resigned as the Chief coach, Manoj was named India's chief Coach of the 50m rifle by NRAI[5] Later same year , he was also appointed as the High performance Coach by SAI for shooting sport.there was also a minor controversy around it[6]
India's performance in 50m event in the 2022 Asian games(which were organised in the year 2023) :-
The country's 50m team gave splendid results for the very first time in the Asian games under his guidance.
Not only did Sift Kaur Samra bagged the country's first ever gold in 50m Rifle 3P event but also broke the world record.[7]
The women and men 50m 3p trios clenched the silver and gold medals where the latter broke the world record[8] 2 individual silver[9] [10]were also bagged by India's 50m 3p squad.
