Margriet Nienke de Schutter (born April 28, 1986, in Groningen) is an international media personality based in The Netherlands and a former ice-skating competitor.[1]. She is a recognized (TV) anchor, motivational speaker, interviewer, author, emcee, and sports journalist.[2][3][4]

Biography
editEarly life
editThe youngest of two children, Margriet learned to skate alongside her brother[5]. Both demonstrated significant potential as young athletes[6][7]. Growing up in a farming community afforded her a strong work ethic while learning to bond with her natural surroundings[8][8]. Margriet attended an elite high school for athletes with a focus on economics.[9][10]
Education
editDe Schutter attended Hanze University in Groningen, obtaining a bachelor’s in science degree (B.S.) in International Communication with a minor in Conflict Management and a specialization in Media and Journalism. As a student, De Schutter undertook screenwriting at the Dutch Northern Film Festival in Leeuwarden in 2010. She won the overall Screenplay Award[11]. De Schutter joined the honors program 'Groningen Talent Group'; an excellence program organized by the City of Groningen, the University of Groningen (RUG), and Hanze University for outstanding students. While in the honors program she, along with her colleagues, created the award-winning documentary 'Going Deep for Vancouver'[12], and wrote a communication analysis as a supporting graduation project. De Schutter interned at OOG TV, where she created and hosted various radio and TV programs.[13]

editShort track speed skating career
editMargriet de Schutter was a member of the Dutch National Short Track Speed Skating Team. She is a five-time Dutch National Champion in the relay[1] and was among the top athletes in the Netherlands. In 2003 (Budapest), she represented the Netherlands at the ISU World Junior Short Track Speed Skating Championships. She finished fourth in the relay[1] during the ISU Short Track World Cup. Her Olympic goal for 2010 Winter Olympics was plagued by injuries and missed making the team. She retired after the 2010 Olympics.[14]

editDe Schutter joined the Dutch National board of the NGO 'Right To Play'[15], founded by Norwegian speed skating champion Dr. Johann Olav Koss OLY. De Schutter hosted the national Right To Play Gala with TV presenter Toine van Peperstraten. Along with other international board members, she also participated in the Right To Play Play-Based Learning programs in Rwanda.

editDe Schutter has served as the Adminstrative Secretary of ‘De Schoverlingen’, the alumni association for former elite athletes in speed skating. The association foments communications and organizes gatherings to maintain connections between current and former athletes[16].

editDe Schutter worked as a freelance counselor for the Athletes' Association of the Dutch Royal Skating Federation (KNSB)[17].
Holland Heineken House
editDe Schutter assisted in hosting the Holland Heineken House during four Olympic Games: London 2012, Sochi 2014, Rio de Janeiro 2016, and PyeongChang 2018[18]. Her duties included overseeing activities at the Olympic Club, the restaurant and lounge for the Royal Dutch Family, Olympic athletes, VIPs, and family and friends of athletes.[19]
Career
editAfter completing De Schutter's sports career, she transitioned into the full-time media industry. As a sports journalist, De Schutter has contributed to the largest speed skating news platform, Schaatsen.nl[20], and other sports-based entities. With her background, she has gained theoretical and practical knowledge to address ongoing international trends, which has the potential to touch communities of all sizes.[2][21]
Her educational and sports experiences attracted the attention of corporate entities in the Netherlands as a motivational speaker. Her lectures address topics including mental health, coping with change, dealing with unexpected situations, and realigning goals.[22] Combining best practices found among Olympic champions in line with her personal narrative, De Schutter is known for providing others the tools to make the most out of a situation and rediscover the meaning of winning[23]. De Schutter became aware of a lack of aftercare in elite sports. Her interest for understanding the power of self-realization resulted in working with the filmmaker Ismael Lotz and producer Thom Verheul[11], to accomplish the award-winning documentary 'Diepgaan voor Vancouver' (Going Deep for Vancouver)[24].
De Schutter founded the Dutch online platform for active & former elite athletes ‘Extopsporter.nl’ and authored[25] the book ‘Stoppen & Doorgaan’ (Stop & Continue)[26][27], which focuses on her story along with stories of fifteen Dutch (Olympic) champions, among others Yvonne van Gennip OLY, Mark Huizinga OLY and Pieter van den Hoogenband OLY.
De Schutter, along with medical researcher Vincent Gouttebarge and orthopedic surgeon Gino Kerkhoffs[28], published a second sports related book, 'The Secret Balance of Champions – Health Challenges in Elite Sport'[29]. The text highlights some of the world's top sports and medical experts and features 32 interviews with renowned international sports heroes such as Mo Farah OLY, Chris Froome OLY, and Arjen Robben. Football legend Marco van Basten, who contributed the foreword.[30]
As a sports journalist, De Schutter has worked with various leading sports-based entities. De Schutter presented the segment 'De Arrenslee' on the TV program RTL Sportcafé: Schaatsen on the Dutch national TV channel RTL 7. She was also one of the presenters on Podium TV in the TV sports program 'FC Noord'.[31]
De Schutter hosted the first International Sports Forum to address sensitive sports topics and was streamed worldwide from Florida, the United States[32]. This was followed by working on the ‘Champions for Health Expo’[3] as an emcee and motivational speaker organized by the City of Fort Myers and the Tiffin University in Ohio[33]. At the Fort Myers Film Festival, De Schutter presented was the host and emcee of the successful Olympic promotional event based on the IOC Celebrate Humanity theme. This involved various elite athletes and artists from a national and international lineup. Her documentary ‘Going deep for Vancouver’ was featured at the accompanying 14th annual Fort Myers Film Festival[34]. De Schutter has been an actress for several screen productions as well as an executive producer on sets. As a filmmaker, she collaborates with nine-time Emmy Award winner[35] and film director John Biffar[36] from Florida. The Florida Governor’s Office for Tourism selected her as speaker[2] for a joint presentation with Olympian Dr. Liston Bochette to address their Convention regarding the economic impact of sport in community development[37]
Awards and Honors
editAs a student De Schutter was awarded the 'City of Talent Certificate'[38] by then-Mayor Peter Rehwinkel of the city of Groningen. Her documentary 'Going deep for Vancouver' was honored with an award in Milan at the world's largest international Sport Film Festival, Fédération Internationale Cinéma Télévision Sportifs (recognized by the International Olympic Committee) in the category "Olympic Spirit – Olympic Values”[12]. De Schutter was inducted in the Walk of Fame[39] on the Zernike Campus of the Hanze University in Groningen.
