Nirupama Belliappa is a harpist / multi-instrumentalist, composer, electronic musician and TV presenter from India and Canada.[1]
Biography
editOriginally from Coorg in South India, Nirupama grew up in Nova Scotia, Canada before moving to Montreal to study at McGill University. She moved to India to start her career as a television personality with NDTV.[2]
Career
editNirupama started her musical career as a live instrumentalist playing the flute and the synthesiser with Indian live electronica band BLaNK. The act were winners of MTV’s Ultimate DJ Championship, performed at Bestival in the UK, and were officially endorsed by German music technology pioneers Native Instruments.[3] The live act covered genres like deep house, tech house, techno, progressive and breakbeat infused with live instrumentation. [4] As part of the band, she performed at music festivals across India including VH1 Supersonic, Sunburn and NH7 Weekender, opening for artists including Sasha, Tiësto and Above And Beyond. [5]
As a presenter with Indian TV Channel NDTV, Nirupama was the on-screen host of various lifestyle based television shows on music and travel - including a world music/travel show featuring collaborations with musicians from around the world.[6] She also chaired a panel at music conference WOMEX in Spain titled “Music Of The Marginalised: Reclaiming The Roots Of Dance Music Culture” aimed at showcasing alternative voices in the dance music space. [7]
