Career
editSince his student years, Oleg Kokhan worked on television, participating in TV projects for the UТ-1 channel and Novyi Kanal. Later, he coordinated the promotional campaign for the "Stozhary" Film Festival, serving as the head of the advertising department and executive producer. Subsequently, he became the founder and co-founder of several companies involved in the production and promotion of audio and video content.
In 2001, he founded the holding company SOTA Cinema Group, with a strategic focus on producing films with an auteur style and social content.
In 2007, Kokhan began producing films for Kira Muratova, continuing his producer career with the large-scale project, Muratova’s film "Two in One". He ensured its distribution in Ukraine and internationally. The world premiere of the film took place at the Tribeca Film Festival[14], and it was later recognized as the best film from the CIS and Baltic countries in 2007. Kira Muratova received awards, including the "White Elephant" and "Golden Apple" for Best Director. The company also won a specialized advertising award in the field of film distribution, "25 Frames", in categories such as Best Trailer, Best Film Art, Best Tagline, and Best BTL Campaign. The film's grand premiere in Kyiv in the fall of 2007 became one of the most anticipated events of the year.
In 2008, Kokhan launched his first international collaborative project – the Ukrainian-Polish film "And a Warm Heart"[15] by the world-renowned director Krzysztof Zanussi. This marked the first time a Memorandum was signed between the Film Service of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of Ukraine and the Polish Film Institute for such a project. The film was shot in both Ukraine and Poland, with its world premiere taking place at the Rome Film Festival, where the lead actor, Bohdan Stupka, received the award for Best Actor.
In the same year, Kokhan released the film "Birds of Paradise" by another legendary director, Roman Balayan. The film was recognized as the best film from the CIS and Baltic countries and, in addition to its acclaim at international film forums, it became the Ukrainian film opening the prestigious Molodist International Film Festival after many years. Roman Balayan received the "Golden Apple" at the Kino-Yalta 2008 Producer’s Festival for Best Director.
In April 2008, Kokhan signed a cooperation agreement with the producer of the film "Women Without Men" by Shirin Neshat, Philippe Bober. The film later became a laureate at many prestigious film forums, and the director, Shirin Neshat, received the Silver Lion for Best Director at the Venice Film Festival.
The new film by Kira Muratova, "Melody for a Street-organ", completed in 2008, was presented in Kyiv after its festival tour. The film was recognized as the best film from the CIS and Baltic countries, and all proceeds from its nationwide distribution were directed towards helping homeless children as part of the social program "Helping is Easy", in collaboration with the film's partner, the mobile operator life:).
In 2009, the production of the film "On Saturday" (directed by Oleksandr Mindadze) began with support from the State Cinema Agency and international partners. Filming took place in the spring and summer of 2010 in the cities of Svitlodarsk and Enerhodar, and the world premiere occurred at the Berlin International Film Festival. The Ukrainian premiere in April 2011 was dedicated to the 25th anniversary of the Chernobyl disaster. The next joint project between the director and producer was the film "Sweet Hans, Dear Peter" by Oleksandr Mindadze, which was filmed in Nikopol.
The collaboration with the great actor Bohdan Stupka continued in a new film project, "Shantrapa", directed by Otar Ioseliani. In 2010, Oleg Kokhan represented Ukraine for the first time in the main competition at the Cannes Film Festival with the feature film "My Joy" by renowned documentary filmmaker Sergei Loznitsa. The film was produced in collaboration with Germany, the Netherlands, and other international partners, with filming taking place in Ukraine. The festival distribution of the film, which included over 20 global film forums, sparked discussions among international film critics and journalists. Moreover, the film faced accusations of being anti-Russian in its portrayal, but this did not prevent it from being released in both international and Ukrainian cinemas.
The collaboration with the legendary Kira Muratova continued with the film "The Eternal Homecoming" (working title "Screen Tests. Classmates") which became the director's final work. Filming took place in Odesa in the autumn of 2011, and the world premiere of the film occurred at the Rome Film Festival. The film was recognized as the best from the CIS and Baltic countries and was later presented to Ukrainian audiences.
The collaboration with director Kirill Mikhanovskiy resulted in the film "Give Me Liberty", which was presented at the Sundance Film Festival and in the Cannes Film Festival program. In May 2019, together with Ukrainska Pravda, Oleh Kokhan released the documentary film "We Still Need to Survive”.
In 2021, Oleg Kokhan initiated and led the new multicultural project SOTA CINEMA & THEATRE HUB, which became a meeting place for the most talented artists and popular stars to connect with audiences. Guests of SOTA CINEMA & THEATRE HUB included the legendary French actress Fanny Ardant[16][17] and the charismatic director Andriy Zholdak[18][19]. The theater premieres and musical performances aimed to introduce lesser-known works by Ukrainian artists and showcase the names of talented contemporary creators.
In 2022, Oleg Kokhan served as the author and executive producer of the international film anthology "Animals of War", which consists of short films by Ukrainian authors featuring international artists. The main characters of the anthology are animals, whose rescue by Ukrainians daily tests their humanity. According to the creators, the project aims to highlight the ecological threats posed by this war to the entire world. The first trailer, based on three novellas, was presented at the Berlin International Film Festival, and during the Cannes Film Festival, Sean Penn[20] joined the project. He later starred in the novella "The Eagle" directed by Myroslav Slaboshpytskyi[21].
In 2023, Oleg Kokhan continued the cycle of documentary portrait films featuring notable contemporary figures and launched the production of the films "Altar", which focuses on the artist Oleksandr Zhivotkov (directed by Roman Balayan), "Doppelganger" about actor Oleksii Bohdanovych (directed by Maksym Tuzov), and "Callsign 'Artist'" about Oleksandr Pecherytsia (directed by Maksym Tuzov).
