PPDS is the global provider of Philips Professional Displays, comprising digital signage, interactive displays, direct view LED displays and professional TVs, under an exclusive trademark license by Koninklijke Philips N.V.
PPDS is a trading name of TP Vision Europe B.V. (“TP Vision”) and MMD-Monitors & Displays Nederland B.V. (“MMD”), registered in the Netherlands, with their head offices in Amsterdam. TP Vision and MMD are wholly owned subsidiaries of TPV Technology Limited (TPV), the world’s largest manufacturer of monitors and a leading provider of display solutions.
By combining the Philips brand promise with TPV’s manufacturing expertise, PPDS brings high quality, innovative digital display products to market ranging in size from a 10” interactive touchscreen through to direct view LED videowall displays. These are brought together with a range of complementary display hardware and software solutions designed to enhance customer experiences in commercial settings.
The company announced its focus on developing more sustainable[1] and energy conscious display products in 2022.
History
edit1891 – 1999
editPhilips has a strong history of innovation[2], dating back since its founding in Eindhoven, Netherlands, in 1891, by Dutch entrepreneurial father and son, Frederik Philips and Gerard Philips. Starting their business to take advantage of the opportunities for innovation presented by the mass introduction of electricity, Philips took shape bringing cost-effective, reliable electric incandescent light bulbs.[3] to market.
By the early 1900s Philips had become the largest private employer[4] in the Netherlands, and with the culture of social responsibility[5] that continues to this day, Philips invested in providing housing, healthcare and sports. It was during this time that they were joined by Gerard’s younger brother, Anton.
In the 1940s, after the second world war, Philips Research – whose first lab was opened in 1914 – developed innovations[6] to aid social and economic recovery. Among health and lighting advances, these also included the miniaturisation and modernisation of Philips radio technologies, and the forerunner of Philips Professional Displays – the mass market television.
In 1971, as the age of video dawned, Philips launched the first video cassette recorder (VCR) – the N1500[7] – and, in the early 1980s, were pioneers in the introduction of videowall displays.
2011 - 2020
editPPDS – or Philips Professional Display Solutions, as it was known at the time – was formed as a part of the wholly-owned subsidiaries of TPV Technology – TP Vision and MMD – in April 2011, when TPV Technology Limited and Philips agreed[8] to form a Netherlands-based television manufacturing joint venture comprising all of Philips' television operations.
The business unit was formed to bring together the professional TVs manufactured by TP Vision, and the digital signage, videowalls, interactive touchscreens, and direct view LED displays manufactured by MMD.
Benefiting as part of an ODM and OBM business, Philips Professional Displays continued to work with customers to bring innovative, reliable, and relevant products to market, designed to address industry challenges and business to business needs. These included the launch of the Philips MediaSuite hospitality TV[9] in 2019, and the reintroduction of Philips direct view LED in 2019.
Answering the market’s need for a solution to capacity management in public spaces during the lockdowns necessitated by the Covid pandemic, in 2020 the company drew upon its agile approach to product development, introducing the award-winning PeopleCount app[10]
2021 onwards
editIn January 2021, the business rebranded with a new name and visual identity – PPDS[11][12] – to complement its sales of Philips Professional Displays with its strategies for a Total Solutions (AVIT) approach, a global focus[13], and a commitment to delivering on sustainable development goals.
Answering the challenges of the 2020s in terms of sustainability focus and rising energy costs, PPDS has developed a range of more energy conscious direct view LED displays – including the 7000 Series[14] and the 6000 Series[15] L-Lines. The 6395 direct view LED[16] is designed using common cathode[17] LEDs, allowing it to use less energy than its counterparts.
In 2023 PPDS was the first global manufacturer to introduce an ePaper display range[18] – Philips Tableaux, designed using E Ink's ePaper technology together with PPDS's Android platform. It also launched its remote display management ecosystem, PPDS Wave[19], including Wave Controller, Wave Creator, and the PPDS ProStore.

In 2023, the business unit operates with sales operations in EMEA, North America, Asia Pacific and India.
Headquarter functions
editThe global marketing, business management, HR, legal, and operations teams are based in the TPV Europe headquarters in Amsterdam, Netherlands.

Studios launched in 2022 include Amsterdam (NL), Charlotte (US), Paris (France), Madrid (Spain), Milan (Italy), Munich (Germany), Stockholm (Sweden), and UK. India’s first PPDS Studio, in New Delhi, was opened in August 2023, and the PPDS Master Showroom was opened in Amsterdam, close to Schiphol Airport in autumn 2023.

editOperations in EMEA are split into regions, including: Benelux; CEE; DACH; France; Iberia; Italy; Nordics; SEE; UK and Ireland.
Sponsorships
editPPDS sponsors a growing list of sports clubs, stadia and events, including:
- Oracle Red Bull Racing, for whom Philips Professional Displays are the exclusive digital display supplier[21] since 2021.
- FC Barcelona's Barca Foundation[22], as a part of the TPV Cares initiative. The Club has also selected Philips Professional Displays for its €1.5 billion upgrade of the Spotify Camp Nou stadium.
- Harlequins Rugby Football Union Club, who chose Philips Professional Displays as its Official AV Supplier in 2019[23], installed throughout Twickenham Stoop Stadium in Twickenham.
Sustainability
editIn 2021, PPDS set sustainability as one of its three core pillars[24], advancing its commitment to the subject from its processes to its product roadmap and ensuring that it is proactively considered throughout its operations.
In 2022, the business’ palletisation project generated a 184 ton Tank to Wheel (TTW) CO2 reduction and 107 ton reduction of wood consumption[25], while its redefined packaging saw the implementation of rationalised, recycled brown boxing and only one colour, soy or water based inks.
The wider TPV Europe business, including AOC, MMD and TP Vision, launched TPV Cares – the platform for its social and environmental impact initiatives. TPV Cares makes the business’ visual and audio experience products, as well as financial and volunteer support, available for deserving community projects that include the Barca Foundation, Eye Care Foundation, Mercy Ships, and Salvation Army, as well as SAVe and Trash Turtles.
The business supports the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and has identified SDG 3 – Good health and Wellbeing, SDG 4 – Quality Education, SDG 12 – Responsible Consumption and Production, and SDG 13 – Climate Action as the most materially aligned to its business.
Among its sustainability accreditations and certifications, the business is also committed to the UN Global Compact, Science Based Targets and the Responsible Minerals Initiative. It holds:
