Petraq "Petro" Gjikuria (Greek: Πέτρος Γκικουρίας; born 8 August 1964[1]) is an ethnically Greek dual citizen of Albania and the United States, who participated in the repeat elections for mayor of Himarë on 4 August 2024. Gjikuria had the support of the coalition Together We Win supported by the opposition and was defeated by his opponent Vangjel Tavo, who was supported by the Socialist Party of Albania.
Biography
editGjikuria was born in 1964 in Dhërmi, a village in the municipality of Himarë, Albania, which is inhabited by ethnic Greeks. After the fall of communism and the opening of the Albanian borders at the end of 1990, Gjikuria settled in Greece. In 1991, he immigrated to the United States together with his brother. He has recently returned back to Himarë, and he was the candidate of the opposition for the repeat local elections in 2024.[2]
