Ruhi Çenet (born October 20, 1990) is a Turkish YouTuber and an independent documentary filmmaker.[1] He first gained recognition by uploading videos that reveal unsettling scientific and historical facts on YouTube platform and later became known for his documentaries in which he explores extreme locations and the lives of people with rare genetic conditions.
As of 2022, Çenet's YouTube channel broadcasts in 15 different languages and has reached over 18 million subscribers worldwide.
Early life
editRuhi Çenet was born in Aydın, Turkey.[2] He spent his childhood in Manisa and Bandırma. [3] During his university years, he shared coding techniques that he learned in class on his blog. He also created a website where he published general knowledge information. Çenet's YouTube journey began in 2008 when he uploaded amateur guitar tutorials. Over time, he adapted his website content into video format, influenced by another channel called Alltime10s.
Following his university years in India,[4] Çenet returned to Turkey and settled in Istanbul.[2] Instead of pursuing a career in software engineering, he chose to become a YouTuber.[4] Today, he runs his channel, @ruhicenetvideos, which has more than 2 billion views worldwide.
Personal life
editRuhi Çenet has an older brother, Ahmet, and a younger sister, Sümeyra. Sümeyra Çenet also runs a YouTube channel with over one million subscribers, where she shares information about different countries.[4]
In 2019, Çenet married Cansu Gizem.[5] The couple has two children[5]: a daughter, Şule, born in 2021, and a son Atlas, born in 2023.
YouTube career
editÇenet began producing videos for YouTube in 2012.[4] His early content featured educational videos with a focus on unsettling themes. Over time, he covered a range of topics, including conspiracy theories, technological advancements, psychiatric disorders, genetic abnormalities, extraterrestrial phenomena, and atrocity crimes. In 2019, he shifted his focus from horror-themed content to on-site documentary production.[6]
Adopting the principle "Curiosity is the best guide"[7], he shifted his focus from horror-themed informative content to on-site documentary production in 2019. This new approach allowed him to take on larger-scale projects and reach a wider audience.
Early 2020, Çenet visited China to learn more about the coronavirus.[1][8]
In October 2020, he went to the Azerbaijan-Armenia frontline. In that documentary, he captured moments of active conflict when a bomb fell just a few hundred meters away.[9]
In 2021, Ruhi Çenet traveled to Tanzania to explore the lives of children with albinism, a condition that occurs at a notably higher rate in the country, approximately one in every 1,429 births. [10] His documentary focuses on a secluded village where many of these children live, often isolated from their communities due to widespread superstitions that label them as bad omens. As a result, many of the children he met had been abandoned by their families. Witch doctors in the region exploit these beliefs, using body parts of individuals with albinism in rituals, claiming they bring wealth and health.[11] This practice has led to severe violence, including dismemberment and killings.[11] Through his documentary, Çenet brings attention to the extreme hardships faced by children with albinism, highlighting the impact of these dangerous superstitions and the persecution they endure.
Broadcasting in Different Languages
editIn 2021, Çenet expanded his YouTube content, which had primarily been in Turkish, to other languages. This began with the launch of an English-language channel in early 2021. By 2022, his content was made available in multiple European languages, followed by other global languages. Today, his channel publishes videos in 15 different languages.
The first videos shared in foreign languages was a documentary about Yakutsk, the coldest city on Earth, which Çenet visited in February 2021. Together with his sister, he produced four videos exploring various aspects of life in such extreme cold with temperatures dropping to -71°C.[12] The first video filmed in Yakutsk alone achieved 185 million global views and YouTube Turkey recognized this video as the best video of the year.
In January 2021, Çenet documented his journey along the Karakoram Highway,[13][14] notoriously known as the world's most dangerous road with over 1,000 reported casualties in Pakistan since its opening to the public in 1978.[15] He covered the pollution issues of Lahore,[16][17] also in Pakistan, the world's most polluted city according to American Air Quality Index reports.[16] In that year, the documentary he filmed in Burundi,[18] the world's economically weakest nation,[19] was honored by YouTube Turkey as the best video of 2022.
In July 2022, Çenet undertook an expedition to the Lut Desert, ranked as the hottest place on Earth by Nasa, where surface temperatures can reach 70°C. During his visit, he became the first person to document a subspecies of Eremiaphila in Gandom Beryan,[20] the desert's hottest point, contrary to past academic reports that no creatures inhabit that region.[21]
In the same year, Çenet launched a video series titled "Extraordinary Lives" in which he interviewed individuals with unique life stories. Notable figures featured in the series include Sultan Kösen,[22][23] the tallest person, measuring 251 cm (8 ft 2.82 in), Rümeysa Gelgi, the tallest woman, measuring 215 cm (7 ft 0.71 in), Jyoti Amge, the world's shortest person with a height of 63 cm (2ft) all of whom are recognized by the Guinness World Records. He also explored the life of Mama Uganda,[24] the most fertile woman with 44 children at the age of 41.
In November 2022, he interviewed conjoined twins Sohna and Mohna Singh.[25] In the interview, it was revealed that the twins, who work for a government institution, receive only a single salary, which led to significant coverage in the British and Indian press. [26][27][28][29]
As a pioneer among Turkish YouTubers in multi-language broadcasting, Çenet has been invited to speak at several Google panels and on conventional media platforms. Starting in 2023, he began utilizing YouTube's multi-track audio feature and delivering his global content exclusively on his main channel.
In December 2023, Çenet posted a documentary about his visit to La Rinconada, Peru, which gathered over 30 million views in 3 months.[30][31][32]
In 2024, he released a documentary focused on Santa Cruz del Islote, the most densely populated island in the world.[33] His following documentary featured the Hadza people, one of the last remaining hunter-gatherer tribes in Tanzania, documenting their traditional way of life and participating in a three-day baboon hunting expedition.[34]
Hacking Incident
editOn April 10, 2024, Ruhi Çenet's channel was hacked through phishing. [35] The channel name was changed to @Ripple_x_live, and all the videos were deleted. [35]
Ruhi Çenet @RuhiCenetOur financial loss since April 10, when our YouTube channel was hacked, is at least $30.000 ($1.500 per day) because the advertising of our videos stopped and currently the views of our videos have crashed due to the algorithm.
3 May 2024[36]
A fraudulent live broadcast, created using AI technology, was streamed on the channel, promoting cryptocurrency investment scams to viewers.[35] This stream was viewed by approximately 200,000 people before it was shut down by YouTube after 9 hours. After discussions with the YouTube team, Çenet managed to recover his channel within 48 hours, which was removed from the YouTube platform due to community guidelines.
On April 17, another fake live broadcast occurred on the channel.[37][38][39] Initially perceived as a second hacking incident, it was later revealed that the hacker(s) had copied the channel's streaming key, allowing them to broadcast. This issue was resolved by changing the channel's streaming key to prevent further unauthorized broadcasts.
Due to a virus that remained active on his electronic devices, the channel was hacked again on May 6, and the name was changed to @SpaacceX, where a SpaceX broadcast began streaming.[40]
The deleted videos were restored by the YouTube team.[41] However, due to the suspension of ad revenue and damage to the channel's algorithm, Ruhi Çenet stated on X that his daily losses amounted to $1,500, with total losses reaching approximately $75,000 during this period. [41] The channel also lost over 300,000 subscribers. [42]
Public perceptions and operational challenges
editSome followers suggest that Çenet uses the name Ruhi, which means 'spiritual,' as a pseudonym. However, contrary to these ongoing claims, Çenet uses his real name on online platforms.
Çenet has been criticized for not having a regular upload schedule. To produce content in 15 different languages, his team includes 8 full-time employees and over 300 freelancers, including translators, editors, and voice actors.
