Production

edit

There have been numerous attempts to remake the 1954 film since the early 1980s. The proposed remake has gone through different phases of development by different writers and filmmakers.[1]

John Landis (1982)

edit

In 1982, following the success of his film An American Werewolf in London (1981), writer-director John Landis became interested in developing a remake of the film with the original film's director Jack Arnold. Landis had reached out to Arnold to return for the project as its director, and British writer Nigel Kneale was commissioned to write the screenplay. Inspiration for the new film according to Kneale, was inspired by the main characters Lennie and George from John Steinbeck's 1937 novella Of Mice and Men. The screenplay contained more comedic elements, and centered on a pair of creatures, one destructive and the other peaceful, being persecuted by the United States Navy. A decision to make the film in 3D led to budgetary concerns and Universal Studios wanting to avoid a clash with Jaws 3-D, which was in development at the time. The project was ultimately canceled by the producers.[1][2]

John Carpenter (1992-1993)

edit

In 1992, Universal president Tom Pollack offered John Carpenter the option to direct a remake of one of the studio's earlier films, with Carpenter choosing Black Lagoon as his next project.[3][4] Carpenter hired Bill Phillips to rewrite Kneale's script,[a] and Rick Baker was brought on to design the 3D model of the Gill-man.[1][4] Phillips' script centers around a marine biologist and a small crew of scientists who venture into the Amazon River to study its diverse aquatic life. The invasive methods of the scientists catch the attention of the mysterious Creature, who begins to pick off the researchers one by one.[1]

Ultimately, the project was never green-lit.[1][4]

Herschel Weingrod and Timothy Harris (1994-1995)

edit

Writers Herschel Weingrod and Timothy Harris worked on a separate draft.[6] Universal offered the director's chair to Peter Jackson in 1995, though he turned down the offer in favor of working on King Kong (2005).[1][7] After Jackson passed on the project, Ivan Reitman entered early talks to direct though it never materialized.[6] Following the financial success of Stephen Sommers' 1999 remake of The Mummy, the project was revived.[8] It was announced in 2001 that Gary Ross had signed on to write and produce it with his father, Arthur A. Ross, one of the original writers.[9] The project never moved forward and was believed to be scrapped.

Guillermo del Toro (2002-2003)

edit

Guillermo del Toro, a fan of the original, was attached to direct a remake in 2002.[10] With creative clashes and his commitments to many other projects, Universal dropped del Toro[b] and hired Tedi Sarafian to write a script in March 2003, before the project fell apart.[10]

Breck Eisner and Carl Erik Rinsch (2005-2011)

Dave Kajganich (2012-2014)

Development

edit

It was announced that James Wan was collaborating with Universal to reboot the studio's Universal Monsters,[12] though no updates were given, and the project was thought to be scrapped. In August 2024, a modern retelling of the 1954 film Creature from the Black Lagoon was being developed for Universal Pictures at Atomic Monster. Wan was in negotiations to produce and direct the film.[13][14]
