Draft:The Garage Theatre

The Garage Theatre is a is a non-profit black box theatre company located at 251 East 7th Street in Long Beach, California. This small ensemble theatre is run by volunteers dedicated to making theatre accessible to everyone. With a focus on producing alternative, and often provocative, theatre, The Garage Theatre frequently gives new playwrights an opportunity to showcase their work[1].

History

edit

The foundation for The Garage Theatre was laid in 1996 when seven friends from the Orange Coast College’s theater department produced a play in a friend's garage (hence the name of the theater)[2]. After graduating from California State University, Long Beach, these same friends went on to establish The Garage Theatre in 2001. For the first few years the fledgeling theatre company didn't have a permanent location, and produced shows at various locations throughout Long Beach and nearby Orange County. In February 2004, when another independent theatre company, The Found Theatre, moved to a newer theatre space down the street, The Garage Theatre found a permanent home in the storefront space on 7th Street that The Found had occupied for 25 years[3].
