The Gray Man (2022)
editFuture
editIn July 2020, Joe Russo stated that The Gray Man was green-lit by Netflix with the intent to develop the property into a franchise detailing a shared universe of related media. The filmmaker stated that whether future projects are made, depends on the reception of the first installment.[4] By December of the same year, the filmmaker reiterated that the intent is for there to be multiple movies following The Gray Man. He stated that he will serve as producer on the projects, alongside his filmmaking partner and brother, Anthony. The pair stated that the first movie will leave unresolved plot-lines, that will be answered in the subsequent releases.[5][6]
In May 2022, Ryan Gosling expressed interest in reprising his role in future installments.[7][8] Later that month, it was announced that two movies are in development, intended to expand The Gray Man into a film series.[9][10][11][12][13] In July of the same year, Netflix officially announced that the series would continue. Together with the filmmakers, it was revealed that they have been developing additional installments with intent to create a shared cinematic univerese based on the property.[14][15][16][17]
Untitled prequel film
editIn May 2022, among other projects, a prequel film was announced as being in development. The movie will center around the villainous character of Lloyd Hansen, portrayed by Chris Evans. Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick were hired to co-write the script.[9][10][11][12][13] By July, the project was officially greenlit by Netflix. The Russos stated that the film will an original story that will be "edgy and experimental", while their intention is for the project to be rated R.[14][15][16]
Untitled sequel film
editIn May 2022, among other projects, a sequel film was announced as being in development. The movie will center around the heroic character of Court Gentry / Sierra Six, as portrayed by Ryan Gosling. The story will continue where the first film ends. Stephen McFeely was hired to write the script.[9][10][11][12][13] By July, the project was officially greenlit with Gosling slated to reprise his role. Anthony and Joe Russo will return in their roles as co-directors, while the filmmakers stated that the story will be based on one of The Gray Man novels. The project will be a joint-venture production between AGBO, Roth/Kirschenbaum Films, and Netflix Original Films. The Russos, Mike Larocca, Joe Roth, and Jeffrey Kirschenbaum will serve as producers.[14][15][16] In November 2023, Scott Stuber the Head of Netflix Films stated work on the script is ongoing; while stating that the plot will focus more on the titular character and slow down the pace as compared to the first movie.[18]
In April 2024, Joe and Anthony Russo confirmed that they are continuing to work on the script for the sequel.[19]
