The Strand Magazine (American) is an American mystery magazine founded in Birmingham, Michigan as a continuation of the The Strand Magazine (British). It is composed of previously unpublished works by famous literary masters, bestselling contemporary authors, interviews, and literature reviews. It was founded in 1998 and published its first issue in December of the same year.[1] and continues publication to this day. The magazine was named in reference to the Strand Magazine (British) that published short fiction and general interest articles in the United Kingdom from January 1891 to March 1950, [2].
The magazine has published unpublished works by F. Scott Fitzgerald, Ernest Hemingway, Agatha Christie, Mark Twain, Tennessee Williams, H.G.Wells, Rod Serling, and Truman Capote reciving media attention from NPR, AP News, and the BBC.
Notable Unpublished Works
editAlthough known to literary scholars, the Strand has published many notable unpublished works by well known authors with the goal of bringing these stories to a broader audience.
2020s
edit"First Squad, First Platoon" written by Rod Serling was published in 2024 after being found in the archives at the University of Wisconsin.[3] [4]
In 2023, "Another Day In Paradise" written by Truman Capote was published in the magazine after being discovered in a notebook used during his time in Sicily, Italy in the late 1950's. [5] [6]
2010s
editIn 2018, the unpublished work "A Room on the Garden Side" written by Ernest Hemingway was published in the Strand with permission from the Hemingway estate.[7] [8]
In 2015, the Strand published "Temperature" an short story written by F. Scott Fitzgerald that was written in 1917 and discovered in Firestone Library at Princeton University.[9] [10]
"With Your Wings" written by John Steinbeck, which had only ever been read during a radio broadcast by Orson Welles in 1944 was published by the Strand for the first time in 2014. The story was found in the archives at the University of Texas - Austin. [11] [12]
Publication History
editThe Strand has published interviews with prominent authors, screenwriters, and other public figures.
During the 2023 SAG-AFTRA Strike, the magazine interviewed Bob Odenkirk (of Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul) and his daughter Erin Odenkirk.[13]
Chuck Palahniuk, the author of Fight Club, spoke to the Strand in 2024 about his new novel Not Forever, But for Now.[14]

editThe first issue of the Strand, published in 1999, featured stories written by James Sallis, Henry Slesar, Denis Smith, Jonathan Harrington, Ben Pastor, and Christopher Roden[15]
Works by John Steinbeck, Ernest Hemingway, Rod Serling, Louisa May Alcott, Shirley Jackson, Agatha Christie, Dashiell Hammett, Raymond Chandler, Tennessee Williams, and H.G.Wells have all appeared in the magazine.[16]
