Thiab Taha(born in October 1949) is a Palestinian, Jordanian, American computer scientist and applied mathematician. He is Professor Emeritus of Computer Science at the University of Georgia (UGA), where he served for nearly 42 years in teaching, research, and academic leadership. He retired from UGA on June 1, 2024.[1] Taha's research focuses on computational and applied mathematics, including nonlinear evolution equations, soliton theory, and numerical methods for wave phenomena, high-performance computing, bioinformatics, and data science. His work includes analysis and numerical simulation of nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS), Korteweg–de Vries (KdV)–type equations, and related models in wave dynamics.[2] Taha’s work with Mark J. Ablowitz on numerical methods that based on inverse scattering transform(IST) for nonlinear wave equations has been discussed in subsequent independent studies of numerical and integrable discretization of the NLS, KdV and modified Korteweg–de Vries (mKdV) equations.[2] [3]

Taha received a scholarship from the Jordanian government for BA studies in Science/Mathematics at the University of Jordan. He received a BS in Mathematics in 1972 and an MS in Mathematics from the same university in 1977. In 1978, he received a scholarship from Clarkson University NY USA, and he received a PhD in applied mathematics and computer science from the same University in 1982.[4]

Academic career

Taha joined the University of Georgia (UGA) in 1982 as an assistant professor in the Department of Statistics and Computer Science and in 1984 he joined the newly established Department of Computer Science at the same university. He served as graduate coordinator and later held academic leadership positions in computer science. [5] From July 2013 to June 2022, Taha served as head of UGA's Department of Computer Science. Following the establishment of the School of Computing on July 1, 2022, he served as its interim director until 30 June 2023. He retired from UGA on June 01, 2024, and became Professor Emeritus of Computer Science.[1] [6] In 1995, The Red & Black newspaper reported that Taha had been awarded a Fulbright Scholarship to conduct research and lecture at the University of Jordan for the 1995–96 academic year. In addition, the newspaper reported that he had been at UGA since 1982, had served as graduate coordinator for the computer science department from 1989 to 1994, and conducted research in scientific computing. It also reported that he was the 1985 winner of the M. G. Michael Award for Research in the Sciences. [5] The Fulbright Scholar Program records Taha as a U.S. Scholar at the University of Jordan during the 1995–96 academic year.[7]

Research

Taha's research focuses on analytical and numerical study of nonlinear evolution equations, particularly computational methods for nonlinear wave equations. His work includes analysis and numerical simulations of NLS, KdV type, mKdV, and related nonlinear dispersive equations. [6] In several papers with Mark J. Ablowitz published in the Journal of Computational Physics, Taha studied analytical and numerical methods for nonlinear evolution equations. They derived differential and partial difference discrete systems related to the inverse scattering transform (IST) and investigated their use as numerical schemes for nonlinear evolution equations.[8] For the NLS equation, Taha and Ablowitz compared an integrable numerical scheme with existing numerical methods, including finite-difference, split-step Fourier, and pseudospectral methods.[9] They conducted a related comparative study for the KdV equation.[10] The KdV work was subsequently discussed by Jerry L. Bona, Vassilios A. Dougalis, and Ohannes A. Karakashian in their study of fully discrete Galerkin methods. They described the Taha–Ablowitz work as a careful comparative study of numerical techniques for approximating solutions of the KdV equation, discussed their testing of eight fully discrete schemes, and reported that a local IST scheme proposed by Taha and Ablowitz gave the best performance among the methods in those experiments.[2] Taha and Ablowitz also derived IST numerical methods for the modified Korteweg–de Vries equation. [11] In a 1997 study of integrable discretizations of the mKdV equation, Yuri B. Suris discussed previously known discretizations due to Taha and Ablowitz and referred to the earlier method as the "Taha–Ablowitz scheme". Suris analyzed his discretizations in relation to the Taha–Ablowitz scheme. [3] Taha later continued work on IST numerical schemes for other nonlinear evolution equations.[12] Taha in collaboration with M. S. Ismail, had carried out numerical studies of compacton solutions of K(m,n)-type equations, including individual compactons and compacton interactions. [13] His broader research has included numerical analysis, scientific and high-performance computing, and system biology. [6]

Professional activities

Taha founded and organized a long-running international conference series on nonlinear evolution equations and wave phenomena, held biennially since 1999 to present. Taha sereves on the Editorial Board and the Steering Committee of the International Arab Conference on Information Technology (ACIT) since its founding in 2000, which has been held annually. [14] Taha has held leadership roles within the International Association for Mathematics and Computers in Simulation (IMACS), including Vice President, Treasurer, and member of the IMACS Board of Directors [15] . He serves as CoEditor-in-Chief of Applied Numerical Mathematics (APNUM) journal. [16]. Taha serves as a senior editor of the Mathematics and Computers in Simulation (MATCOM) journal.[17] He has also participated as an invited or keynote speaker at several international scientific meetings. At the 2000 International Arab Conference on Information Technology (ACIT), he delivered a keynote lecture on parallel numerical investigation of fiber-optic communication systems. ,[4] At MASCOT 2010 at the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Taha delivered an invited keynote lecture on parallel numerical methods for solving nonlinear evolution equations. [18] In 2017, he was a keynote speaker at the 8th International Conference on Information Technology in Amman, Jordan, on big data and the Internet of Things.[19]

Honors

In 1985, Taha was awarded the M. G. Michael Award for Sciences from Franklin College of Arts and Sciences at UGA. [5] [20] In 1995, Taha was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship to lecture and conduct research in Jordan, as reported by The Red & Black newspaper and the Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program. [5] [7]
