University Law College (ULC; ବିଶ୍ୱବିଦ୍ୟାଳୟ ଆଇନ ମହାବିଦ୍ୟାଳୟ), a prominent constituent college of Utkal University in Bhubaneswar, Odisha under Government of Odisha. It started in the academic year 1975-76. Approved by both the Bar Council of India (BCI) and the University Grants Commission (India) (UGC), ULC offers a range of undergraduate and postgraduate programs tailored to meet the evolving demands of the legal profession.
History
editULC was established as an evening teaching department within the Vani Vihar campus of Utkal University. Initially, it operated without a dedicated building, reflecting the nascent stage of its development. However, recognizing the crucial need to enhance legal education in the region, both the university authorities and the Government of Odisha undertook concerted efforts to improve the college’s infrastructure and academic standards.
Over the years, these efforts, lead to the construction of a dedicated building for the Law College within the Vani Vihar premises. This new infrastructure spans over 2.5 acres and features state-of-the-art facilities designed to provide a conducive environment for legal education.
Introduction of Integrated Courses
editIn 1997-98, ULC introduced a 5-year integrated B.A LL.B (Hons.) course. This initiative was in response to directives from the Ministry of Law, aimed at providing a comprehensive curriculum that integrates undergraduate studies with rigorous legal training. The design and oversight of this course were entrusted to a high-power committee chaired by a sitting judge of the Hon’ble High Court of Odisha, ensuring the program’s quality and relevance.
Curriculum and Accreditation
editThe curriculum at ULC is a product of collaborative efforts between the Bar Council of India and the University Grants Commission, New Delhi. The college’s programs include the three-year Bachelor of Law with Honours [LL.B.(H)] and the five-year integrated B.A., LL.B. (H), both offered on a full-time basis. Additionally, ULC offers a two-year full-time Masters of Law in Human Rights [LL.M. (HR)], catering to the growing demand for specialized knowledge in human rights law.
Accredited by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (N.A.A.C.), ULC is recognized for its academic excellence and commitment to maintaining high standards in legal education.
Events & Activities
editULC recently concluded the 75th International Conference on Universal Declaration of Human Rights[1] in its campus.
