editSony Pictures had begun developing a film based on the character Hypno-Hustler by December 2022, as part of Sony's Spider-Man Universe (SSU) shared universe based on Spider-Man-related Marvel Comics characters. Donald Glover was attached to star as the character and serve as a producer, while Myles Murphy was writing the script. Glover had previously been lobbied to appear in a Spider-Man property by fans, and had voiced Miles Morales / Spider-Man in the Disney XD series Ultimate Spider-Man (2015) and portrayed Aaron Davis in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) film Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017). Glover was excited by the character being a band leader in the comics, that there was less baggage of a canon that would allow for a freeing interpretation, and by Murphy's approach. Borys Kit at The Hollywood Reporter noted that the film could explore different musical periods and genres such as being a period piece focused on disco, a modern reimagining of hip-hop, or a futuristic cyberpunk version.[1]
