The Utah Journal of Communication (UJOC) is a semi-annual academic journal that focuses on research and scholarship in the field of communication.[1]. It typically publishes articles, research papers, and reviews related to various aspects of communication studies, including media studies, rhetoric, interpersonal communication, organizational communication, sport communication, and more[1]. While it is not directly affiliated with any specific academic institutions or professional organizations in Utah, it is published by Southern Utah University Press[2].

History & Background

The UJOC was first published in November 2022[3]. The first issue was created, edited, and published by the Southern Utah University Communication Department[3]. The first issue was comprised of sample articles or previously unpublished research designed to give prospective authors a general idea of the length and format of submissions[3]. In the following months, a second issue was issued by the SUU Communication Department, with its contents serving as a guide for prospective contributors[4].

The inaugural issue of the UJOC was published in May 2023[5]. This was the first issue of the UJOC that solicited submissions from communication scholars across the country and featured members on the editorial board outside of the SUU Communication Department[5]. Since then, the UJOC has typically followed a publication schedule of publishing every November and May[6]. The UJOC alternates from being a forum for general communication research and special themed issues with each publication[7]

The founding editors of the UJOC are Dr. Hayden Coombs and Dr. Braden Bagley, both of the SUU Communication Department[2]. Dr. Coombs has served as the publication's editor-in-chief since its inception, with Dr. Bagley serving as the content director[2].
