Premise

M, a university dropout low on money and luck, volunteers to take care of his terminally ill grandmother, in the hope of pocketing an inheritance.

How to Make Millions Before Grandma Dies was produced by Jor Kwang Films and was co-written and directed by Pat Boonnitipat, in his feature film debut. Its original title was The Chinese Family, due to its depiction of the relationship of Sino Thai family members.[2] The film was inspired by Boonnitipat's life and contemporary Thai familial society.[3]

Putthipong "Billkin" Assaratanakul was cast in the lead role alongside debutante Usha Seamkhum.[4] Filming took place in Talat Phlu, a traditional Chinese community recognized as one of Bangkok's Chinatowns.[5]

How to Make Millions Before Grandma Dies was released in Thailand by GDH on April 4. The film premiered internationally in competition at the 23rd New York Asian Film Festival on 17 July 2024.[6]

In Asia, the film began screening on May 15, in Indonesia; May 30 in Brunei, Laos, Malaysia, and Singapore; Myanmar on May 31; Vietnam on June 7; Hong Kong and Macao on June 13; Cambodia on June 18; Taiwan on June 21; and Timor-Leste on June 26. It was released in mainland China on August 23 and set to be released in South Korea in October 2024. GDH handled distribution across Southeast Asia, with the South Korean release set to be distributed by NK Contents, and the Chinese release handled by Teamer Media.[7]

In August 2024, Vertigo Releasing acquired the film's theatrical distribution rights for the United Kingdom and Ireland: this was followed by Vedette Film for the Netherlands and Belgium, PVR for India, and Well Go USA for North America. The film is set to be released in North America on September 13, in the Netherlands on October 10, in Belgium on November 13, and in the United Kingdom and Ireland in December. The Indian release date is yet to be confirmed.[8]

How to Make Millions Before Grandma Dies is set to be released on streaming in Southeast Asia by Netflix on September 12, 2024.[9] Netflix will also release the film in other countries later in 2024.[10]

How to Make Millions Before Grandma Dies has grossed US$27 million worldwide, including ฿339 million in Thailand,[11] and became the highest-grossing Thai film of 2024 after grossing ฿250 million in its first fourteen days of release.[11] It grossed ฿172.57 million in combined receipts in Metropolitan Bangkok and Chiang Mai, becoming the highest-grossing GDH film in Thailand and eleventh-highest grossing domestic film of all time.[12] According to GDH, the film has been screened to over ten million people.[1]

Outside of Thailand, the film broke several box office records.[13] In Indonesia, it is the highest-grossing Thai film and highest grossing Asian film,[14][13] and it became the highest-grossing Thai film in Singapore,[15][13] Myanmar,[16] Malaysia,[13] and the Philippines.[1] How to Make Millions Before Grandma Dies saw increased popularity after videos of staff at theaters in the Phillipines handing tissues to viewers prior to screening the film went viral.[12]
