History

edit

Imaduddin School was inaugurated on 5 September 2001 by the former President of Maldives, Maumoon Abdul Gayoom.[2]

The name Imaduddin refers to Muhammad Imaduddin I who ruled the Maldives during the late 1600s. The school has almost 2000 students. Until 2009 the school taught students up to grade 7. After 2010 it also taught grades 8–10. It is the first primary school in Maldives that also has secondary classes. The school also provides education for students with special needs called "Jewel Center".[8]

In January 2023, Neelan Fihaara, or "Japan",[9] a second-hand shop in Malé was lit on fire, and reports came to the Police at around 5:30 am. The fire spreading towards the north of the market and heading towards Imaduddin School was controlled at 7:25 a.m., while the fire in the east was controlled by 8:25 a.m. by the collaborative effort of the MNDF, Police Services, and the public. The blaze had also spread towards an accommodation block for expatriate workers towards the east and had completely burned down the building. 165 workers from Bangladesh and 1 from India were living in the accommodation block, all of them employed by the Malé City Council. The 250 people impacted by the fire were provided temporary shelter at Imaduddin School and arrangements were made to give them food and water.[10][11]

On 30 August 2023, the school started an exchange program, where four students and the headmaster of Akash International School, a school in India, came to Imaduddin and Iskandhar for a week.[12] Grade 9 students of Imaduddin also went to 3 schools in Bangalore.[13]
