Premise

edit

Five years after the events of Jurassic World Dominion, the planet's ecology has proven largely inhospitable to dinosaurs. Those remaining exist in isolated equatorial environments with climates resembling the one in which they once thrived. The three most colossal creatures within that tropical biosphere hold the key to a drug that will bring miraculous life-saving benefits to humankind.

Johansson plays skilled covert operations expert Zora Bennett, contracted to lead a skilled team on a top-secret mission to secure genetic material from the world's three most massive dinosaurs. When Zora's operation intersects with a civilian family whose boating expedition was capsized by marauding aquatic dinos, they all find themselves stranded on an island where they come face-to-face with a sinister, shocking discovery that's been hidden from the world for decades.

Development

edit

In May 2020, Frank Marshall stated that the plot of Jurassic World Dominion (2022) would mark "the start of a new era" of the franchise in which humans have to co-exist with dinosaurs.[4][5] Director and writer Colin Trevorrow, who spent nine years working on the Jurassic World trilogy, said in May 2022 that he would likely not return for another film, except in a possible advisory role.[6]

In late January 2024, it was reported that a new Jurassic film was in development by Universal Pictures, with David Koepp writing the screenplay, after previously working on Jurassic Park (1993) and its sequel The Lost World: Jurassic Park (1997).[7][8][9] Like the Jurassic World films, the new installment would be produced by Marshall and Patrick Crowley through The Kennedy/Marshall Company, while Steven Spielberg would return as executive producer through Amblin Entertainment.[7][10] The film will be a completely new take. The characters from the Jurassic Park and Jurassic World trilogies, namely those of actors Chris Pratt, Bryce Dallas Howard, Sam Neill, Laura Dern, and Jeff Goldblum, were not expected to return.[7][11]

Development of the project had been underway for some time,[7][12] with several drafts already written by Koepp.[10] The producers had also done some pre-production work, including dinosaur designs, meaning that any creative input from the eventual director would be minimal.[10][13] The position was reportedly described as being "more shooter than auteur", as the producers seek to have more creative control than Dominion,[10] which earned mostly negative reviews.[14]

David Leitch was briefly in talks to direct the film during early February 2024,[15] but negotiations broke down after several days,[16] as the project's progress up to that point left little room for his creative input.[10][17] Gareth Edwards was announced as director later that month.[18] Spielberg enjoyed Edwards' Godzilla (2014) and Edwards is a fan of the original Jurassic Park.[14][19] Edwards had planned to take a break from studio filmmaking and was busy writing a new film when he was offered the Jurassic World project, which he described as "the only movie that would make me drop everything like a stone and dive right in".[18]

Casting was underway in March 2024, and continued over the next three months. Scarlett Johansson,[20] Jonathan Bailey,[21] Manuel Garcia-Rulfo,[22] Rupert Friend,[23] Mahershala Ali,[24] Luna Blaise,[25] David Iacono,[26] and Audrina Miranda[27] eventually joined the project. Johansson is a fan of the franchise and had wanted to join it for more than a decade.[28] Jennifer Lawrence had been in consideration for the role that ultimately went to Johansson.[29] Glen Powell, who voiced Dave in the animated series Jurassic World Camp Cretaceous (2020–2022), turned down a role.[30] Paleontologist Stephen Brusatte returns from the previous film as a dinosaur consultant.[31] In August, Béchir Sylvain joined the cast.[32]

Filming

edit

Principal photography began on June 13, 2024, in Thailand.[33] Filming lasted a month there,[34][35] and took place at Khao Phanom Bencha National Park in Krabi,[36] Ko Kradan at Hat Chao Mai National Park in Trang, and Ao Phang Nga National Park in Phang Nga.[37] Filming moved to the Malta Film Studios in Kalkara, Malta in July 2024.[38] A month later,[39] filming moved to London and Sky Studios Elstree in the United Kingdom,[40][41][42] before wrapping on September 27, 2024.[43] John Mathieson serves as the cinematographer.[44] Some reshoots were made in New York City, New York in October.
