- 1936 - Spanish Revolution: the Confederación Nacional del Trabajo (CNT) joins the Government of Spain, with Joan Peiró acting as Minister of Industry, Juan López Sánchez as Minister of Commerce, Joan Garcia i Oliver as Minister of Justice and Federica Montseny as Minister of Health.

- 1936 - Spanish Civil War: The republican government of Francisco Largo Caballero flees from Madrid to Valencia.

- 1893 - Spanish anarchist Santiago Salvador threw two Orsini bombs into the crowd at Barcelona's Liceu Theater, as revenge for the execution of another Spanish anarchist.
- 1936 - Spanish Revolution: The Madrid Defence Council is established, appointing Ricardo Amor Nuño Pérez as Minister of War Industries and Mariano García Cascales as Minister of Information and Liaison.

- 1919 - Ukrainian War of Independence: The Revolutionary Insurgent Army kills 136 Mennonites in the Eichenfeld massacre.
- 1936 - Spanish Civil War: The Siege of Madrid begins with a nationalist offensive.

- 1922 - Ecuador: The Guayaquil general strike grows to its largest extent, but is violently suppressed by the Armed Forces.
- 1973 - Greece: The Athens Polytechnic uprising gains popular support and the slogan "Bread-Education-Freedom" is popularized.

- 1973 - Greece: The Athens Polytechnic uprising announces its intention of overthrowing the military regime, which in turn begins a violent repression of the uprising.

- 1878 - Italy: Umberto I of Italy stabbed and wounded by Giovanni Passannante. The prime minister Benedetto Cairoli is also injured while defending the king.
- 1973 - Greece: The Athens Polytechnic uprising is violently repressed by the military regime, killing 24 students.
- 1983 - Mexico: The Zapatista Army of National Liberation (EZLN) is founded in eastern Chiapas by members of former rebel movements.

1915 - Joe Hill, songwriter, itinerant laborer, and union organizer for the Industrial Workers of the World, is executed by the state of Utah after a controversial trial. His ashes were placed into 600 small envelopes, sent around the world, and released to the winds on May Day 1916.

- 1936 - Spanish Civil War: Buenaventura Durruti killed by a bullet through his heart.
- 2011 - Chile: The Antagonic Nuclei of the New Urban Guerrilla leaves a simulated explosive device at a Banco Santander branch in Santiago.

- 1918 - Ukrainian War of Independence: The Revolutionary Insurrectionary Army of Ukraine occupies Huliaipole, where they establish the control of Katerynoslav by the Makhnovshchina.
- 2006 - Mexico: After threats from the police, the Popular Assembly of the Peoples of Oaxaca dismantles their barricades in Oaxaca City, ending the 2006 Oaxaca protests.
