Somebody has deleted the Characters section as well as the music , magazines and retail section! Is there some troglodyte that needs to be stopped or what?

Categories do have history pages... but not if they are deleted. The mentioned pages were moved for consistency with other category names, therefore the old categories were deleted. I've directed the pages to the new categories now, though. --TheDotGamer ^Talk June 30, 2005 03:57 (UTC)

"Indie" is not a genre Hi guys, I was reading a wiki article on Starbound, and wanted to know what kind of game it is, so I looked into the right info-box, and found - Genre: Indie. This is incorrect, genre is supposed to specify how the game plays, while "indie" is business/publishing model, it specifies how the game gets marketed and distributed. So I changed it there, but I also wanted to let you know, maybe you do already, but... well... how'd I know that? When do you link to this portal from a computer game article and when do you not?

I saw this Computer and video games portal linked from one game article, so edit-added it to another, only to have it promptly reverted with an "unnecessary" comment. Is there disagreement over awareness and use of this portal? A curious newcomer -- Sitearm | Talk 17:38, 2005 August 8 (UTC)

I read the introductory descriptions on WikiProject:Computer and video games and WikiPortal:Computer and video games and it seems to me that Computer and video game and genre articles may well include a link to WikiPortal:Computer and video games because Unlike WikiProjects, WikiPortals are meant to be used both by editors and by readers of Wikipedia.. Readers reading about one particular game or genre may find the portal a good start point to learn more about similar games, genres, or games in general. I know I do.

I would agree that WikiProject:Computer and video games would be better linked to from a narrower set of pages such as Computer and video games because A WikiProject is... a resource to help coordinate and organize article writing. It is a resource for editors.

Featured VG article template

I've created a template with which to identify the selected articles of this WikiProject. I thought that it would be useful, especially to serve as recognition to good VG articles that haven't (yet) been promoted to featured article on the main page. The template is accessible via {{Featured_VG}}{{Selected CVG}} and looks like this:

As many as are strictly relevant to the topic at hand and notable enough to appear in a reasonably sized list. If you're making an article about Sim City, then Maxis's site must be on there, but "SimDude8090's GeoCities Strat Guide" must not. --Michiel Sikma 06:32, 24 January 2006 (UTC)

Moby Games?

That is strange. No game entries will appear on Mobygames until they actually get released. So there's no point linking to there on Portal for a few more months. Maybe some wiki editor was just trying to leave a space for the links? --WildKard 00:09, 3 August 2006 (UTC)

The-underdogs

I noticed that what was once http://www.the-underdogs.org is now defunt and points to generic advertizing rubbish. Several game entries such as Robot Odyssey have a link to what was once the game's entry in this site - is there a possibility to write a bot to remove these on a global level? I think the new domain is http://www.the-underdogs.info . You might be able to do this using the Wikipedia:AutoWikiBrowser. Fair-use image

I've removed the Half-Life 2 game cover image from the selected article section as it violates Wikipedia's fair use policy. Selected articles/pictures are rarely updated, so here's an idea

The selected articles/pictures rarely seem to get updated. The current selected article has been there nearly two months and the selected picture about a month and a half. To improve variety, I think it would be a good idea if we create a few pages, each with either a selected article or selected picture and then set them up to be included in the portal based on a certain time.

It would work in a similar way to featured pictures and articles on the main page. But I feel we should run it on a looping system instead, so that it would run perfectly fine without anyone updating it, but people could change it if they wanted to.

This could be done by creating seven selected articles and seven selected pictures. Each day a different one would be included based on the day of the week. For example:

• Monday 12th: Game 1
• Tuesday 13th: Game 2
• Wednesday 14th: Game 3
• Thursday 15th: Game 4
• Friday 16th: Game 5
• Saturday 17th: Game 6
• Sunday 18th: Game 7
• Monday 19th: Game 1
• Tuesday 20th: Game 2

And so on. This way we would have a different game each day. The pages with each game on could be changed at any time. So if Game 3 was NetHack, I could come along and change that to BZFlag, then in the future, it would show that instead.

I think this may require the page to be purged, but there's a big link for that at the top, so I'm sure someone presses it. Even if it doesn't get clicked for a little while, this method still has a lot more variety than the current method.

If people think this is a good idea, I'm happy to make the pages and add in descriptions for seven selected articles and pictures. Anyone can change them in the future. I'll make a page which shows all seven features articles and another which shows all seven featured pictures, so that it's easy for people to change them. Icey 14:00, 2 September 2006 (UTC)

Did you know box problem

There's a well visible problem with Did you know box in Mozilla browser. It overlaps with the others, being displayed directly under the WikiProjects box. I'm not sure how to fix it in a good way. I made a quick fix with br-clear so it displays correctly, but possibly it needs more specific attention. Please report if there are any problems with display now. Deletion Issue

Hi there, I've just created an article about an Online Game named Regnum Online, and I have an issue with a user (User:Pan Dan) who insists the article is about web content and insists on deleting it. The article is written in a similar fashion as Lineage II or World of Warcraft, so I don't see why it is inappropriate. If you could lend me a hand in this matter I would be grateful.

I don't think Torchic should still be appearing as a Featured Article.

Media listing in infobox/digital distribution listings

Are there guidelines for media listings in infoboxes? Most games have CD/DVD/Bluray, and that's fine, but when people put "Steam" as a media, it doesn't work (especially when a game is available from multiple services), and some articles have "Download" while I would think "Digital Distribution" might work better. Maybe some guidelines when dealing with digital distribution of titles under the media section, as well as when adding comments about digital distribution to games. Do games need a comment saying "released on Steam" or the like? Should DD release dates be listed in the infobox? (GTA 4 Lost and Damned has this, but there was a significant delay between DD and boxed). Lonyo (talk) 19:57, 27 October 2009 (UTC)

Help/Guidance needed on new browser game article

Hi! The other day, the Facebook game Fish Wrangler was voted the best Facebook Game and best Facebook Application at the Open Web Awards by Mashable. As (I think) that makes it notable, I decided to start up an article.

Only problem is that I am useless at writing articles!

I have put a request on the Fish Wrangler forum boards for help, and I have also asked the game's developer to upload a few images to Wikipedia for us to use in the article. Knowing how passionate the players of the game are about Fish Wrangler (well, I am one of the Wrangler addicts!), it could far too easily become an advert for the game, or an instruction Wiki (we already have one of those).

So, would it be possible for someone to help write the article, or (at the very least) pop over and guive some guidance on good things to include in the article? Having an impartial third party to look over the article from time to time to keep us on the straight and narrow would be very helpful. Thanks! Stephen! ^Coming... 08:45, 19 December 2009 (UTC)

There are a few things to keep in mind when updating Portal:Current events/Video gaming/In the news.

• Report from reputable sites.
  • Check out this page for sources.
  • Add the link in a single set of brackets ([http://www.example.com]) after the news item.
• Make sure the number of news items does not exceed 10. For every item you add, please make sure to remove one from the bottom.
• Use the {{*mp}} for the bullet points, and include the month and date the news item was reported ({{*mp|April 9}}). This helps keep track of when to update.
• Bold the subject of the news item.
• Try to keep things balanced. All Nintendo news or news focused solely on single titles omits too much stuff. Try to include:
  • Sales milestones for single games, series, and hardware
  • Announcements for new games and hardware
  • Industry events like trade shows and conferences
  • Don't forget about the PC (gaming is not confined to consoles)
  • Company announcements like mergers, bankruptcies, and buyouts
  • And it doesn't hurt to include some obscure tidbits that you find interesting.
• Adding an image is not required, but is helpful. However...
  • The image should be relevant to one of the news items. Include "(pictured)" after the pictured subject in the news item.
  • Make sure it is a "free" image. Check out commons:Category:Video games for free images.
  • If you can, avoid using any picture already on Portal:Video games/Picture. There's a chance the picture will be on the portal twice otherwise.
  • The size can be tricky because some images are wide while others are tall. Wide images can be around 110–120px wide, whichever doesn't clutter the text as much. Tall images can be around 90–100px wide, again, whichever doesn't clutter the text as much.

Hi. I saw the question you posted at Portal talk:Video games.

Typically there's no reason to include the rear of a box. The most identifying aspect of the box art is the front cover. Anything more would be unnecessary and push the boundaries for WP:NFCC. I'm unsure if this is the right place but two stubs I created, Chameleon (game engine) and Naughty Dog Engine have not been given any rating on the importance scale (which I have seen on other VG related articles). The importance is set on the talk pages for article with {{WikiProject Video games}}. This also classifies the game as being under the scope of WP:VG. Different platforms - different games

A big problem I have stumbled upon is the fact, that there doesn't seem to be a rule for how to properly handle multiple games for different platforms that go by the same name. In a few cases there is separate articles for different platforms (for example there is "Street Fighter: The Movie (home video game)" and "Street Fighter: The Movie (arcade game)" despite the fact that the games are quite similar), but there is a whole lot of absurd situations, especially in the case of games based on movie licenses, where handheld versions of a game have the same title as their home console or computer counterpart and share one article. In general these games have nothing in common besides a similar release date, a common publisher, the title and their license, while their engine, game mechanics and developer are mostly completely different. As a result there is lots of absurd articles where a handheld console such as the Game Boy Advance may be listed as a platform while the article does not cover it at all. I would propose that in these cases there should be separate articles for the handheld versions, for example titled "Max Payne (Game Boy Advance)". In my eyes there is a lot of articles that require this kind of change. If there actually already is a rule how to handle this, then I have to say that it's either bad or it's not being followed at all. --F4LL0UT (talk) 17:37, 19 January 2011 (UTC)

Particularly for movie-based games, the press rarely gives much attention to the variations between versions even if they are significant. If there is a lot of sourced discussion on one specific platform for a game and similarly a lot for a different platform, then one can likely created separate articles. But if reviewers ignore, say, the DS version of a game in lieu of talking the 360 and PS3 versions, there's not much we can do about that DS version. It's all about what the sources can support, not how different the games are. --MASEM (t) 17:42, 19 January 2011 (UTC)

Reviewers certainly do distinguish the games as many of these articles feature separate "reception" paragraphs for the handheld games with absolutely separate results (in most cases much worse then their home console counterparts). And I do not think that the ignorance of the press should lead to ignorance in the Wikipedia. Also this does not justify the error of listing all platforms in the information box while the article discusses another game. Either way the different versions should at least feature separate information boxes so that there is no confusion. --F4LL0UT (talk) 18:36, 19 January 2011 (UTC)

Critique of decades

As some of you may have noticed, I spend a lot of time editing the decade pages (i.e 2000s in video gaming, 2010s in video gaming). Obviously, the 2010s page is a little rough and won't have its content fulfilled until the end of 2019, but what I am requesting is a little critique of those pages. In my mind, I view the '2000s in video gaming' page as an ideal model for the layout of these decade pages (that means having a section for what generations are present, some of the history, any specific paradigms, and a list of notable franchises established). I haven't looked much into the nineties and prior decade pages, but from what I've seen, they need a lot of work to matching the type of concise, clean layout requirements that I, and a few other users, have established. I don't have much time to dive into the '90s and conform it to the clean, 2000s-layout example, because that article is a beast of information. I may get to it eventually, but it may be slow and in chunks. What do all of you think of the decades pages? (Tigerghost (talk) 06:51, 15 February 2014 (UTC))

Every single link to a Future Publishing site is broken

Future Publishing recently consolidated their magazine sites into gamesradar.com. Existing links to Future Publishing sites, including magazine sites used as references in our video game articles, have been redirected to gamesradar.com. The links go either to the gamesradar front page, the magazine site's new front page, or sometimes to a piece of relevant content. However they almost never link to the original material that is being cited. For example, this link in the MGS2 article: [3] redirects to this: [4] This affects sites like C&VG, Edge-online, PC Gamer UK, and loads more. Every single one of those reference links is going to have to be changed to the article's new location, an archive.org link, or a citation needed tag. • I have been maintaining the news portion since June last year. I don't really see the need o updating it more often given that there isn't a lot of significant gaming news. I am not inclined to add game's announcements unless they are announced during important exhibitions like TGS, Gamescom, E3, PSX etc.

• As AdrianGamer said, a DYK section would be a nice addition.
• The dates in the "In this month" section should probably be changed from "YYYY-MM-DD" to "DD MM YYYY".

Inclusion of in-game information

As Modern Warfare 2 is set from the 10th to 16th of August 2016 (as can be seen in, for example, the Call of Duty Wiki), it may be worth including something to celebrate/note the game's setting next month. Help with a project.

Being a gamer, you might think that sometimes several Game Franchises are connected together.

That's why I've started a Timeline: The Gaming Multiverse Timeline.

Here's what it is:

- It's kinda like that Master VG Timeline, but with Google Sheets.

- It'll include dates for levels & YouTube Videos. (Links to wiki pages of the Franchises might be provided.)

- Lot's of Games.

And that's just the tip of the iceberg.

The reason I'm writing this is to reach out to you folks on Wikipedia to help me by providing info & dates.

I don't intend to do it by myself, that's why I'm allowing volunteers.

I have been convenience that there are certain game developer region that have in influence the video game industry. I would like to purpose that people would help in make a article on game developer regions that are influential in the median. Some region I can name off the top of my head are Los Angeles, Seattle, Boston, Maryland, etc. I want a approval to do this and some editors to help me cited and critique the articles. Duke Nukem Forever

I can't find why the scores of GamePro, GameSpy and Joystiq in the reception infobox are invisible. The boxes containing the scores remain blank, but when I hover over it with my mouse, it does show the scores. Anybody? Oxygene7-13 (talk) 19:25, 1 April 2017 (UTC)

Notice from the Portals WikiProject

WikiProject Portals is back!

The project was rebooted and completely overhauled on April 17th, 2018. Its goals are to revitalize the entire portal system, make building and maintaining portals easier, support the ongoing improvement of portals and the editors dedicated to this, and design the portals of the future.

As of May 2nd, 2018, membership is at 60 editors, and growing. You are welcome to join us.

There are design initiatives for revitalizing the portals system as a whole, and for improving each component of portals. So far, 2 new dynamic components have been developed: Template:Transclude lead excerpt and Template:Transclude random excerpt.

Tools are provided for building and maintaining portals, including automated portals that update themselves in various ways.
