Early life and revolutionary beginnings
editRam Kalyan Sharma was born in 1912 in Bundi city (previously known as Bundi State) in the state of Rajasthan, India. Inspired by the fervor of the independence movement led by figures such as Bhagat Singh and Chandra Shekhar Azad, Sharma became actively involved in revolutionary activities at a young age.[2]
Role in the freedom struggle
editSharma joined various revolutionary organizations that were committed to overthrowing British rule in India. He participated in protests, strikes, and acts of civil disobedience, advocating for the rights and dignity of the Indian people.[3]
Martyrdom
editOn August 11, 1947, Ram Kalyan had left home for Hindoli Court in the morning. When he reached Nahar ka Chohatta place in Bundi after leaving his two daughters at school, someone gave him a message that there was no one to lead the procession of Motor Trade Association. So he immediately took a decision and himself set out to lead the procession on foot.[3]
Section 144 was imposed in the city by the then British administration. Therefore, it was decided to take out the procession outside the city. But after moving a little further, the procession was stopped by the British police there too. Sharma was leading the procession carrying the country's flag. His path was also blocked by the police. That place was presently located in front of the doors of the sports complex near Khoja Gate School, Bundi. At that time there used to be a large number of trees there.[3]
After the police stopped the procession, due to aerial firing on the people involved in the procession, due to the stampede, people climbed the trees and martyr Ramkalyan Sharma remained there along with some people carrying the flag and sat on the ground carrying the tricolor flag. The British warned him to stop the procession, leave the flag, appealed to his family and asked him to leave. But Ram Kalyan did not leave the Indian tricolor.[1]
At last the police opened fire on him and he fell on the ground holding the tricolor flag. Within no time the entire crowd dispersed inside. He was taken to the hospital. But he could not be saved and just 4 days before the Independence Day, he sacrificed his life in the glory of the tricolor.[1]
