Shell Technology Centre Bangalore

The Shell Technology Centre Bangalore (STCB) is a research and engineering centre operated by Shell in Bengaluru, Karnataka, India. Established in 2006, it is one of Shell's three principal global technology hubs, alongside centres in Houston and Amsterdam.[1][2] Its present 52-acre (21 ha) campus near Devanahalli opened in 2017 and contains laboratories and technology-demonstration facilities.[3]

History

Shell established the technology centre in Bangalore in 2006.[1] By 2015, Business Today described STCB as one of Shell's three technology hubs, together with Houston and Amsterdam.[2]

A new purpose-built campus near Kempegowda International Airport was inaugurated on 31 March 2017. The campus consolidated research and development personnel who had previously worked at separate Shell locations in Bengaluru. At its opening, about 1,000 people worked at the centre, which had capacity for up to 1,500.[3] Agence France-Presse reported that the 21-hectare (52-acre) facility contained laboratories and demonstration centres and formed part of Shell's expansion of research and development activities in Asia.[4]

Research and programmes

Research at STCB has included liquefied natural gas, subsurface modelling, engineering design, bitumen, distillation and computational research.[3]

Research at the centre has included the IH2 process for converting forestry, agricultural and municipal waste into hydrocarbon fuels. In 2015, Business Today reported on catalyst development for the process at STCB.[2] A demonstration facility was subsequently constructed at the Bangalore centre. A 2023 IEA Bioenergy review described the facility as active, with a capacity of five tonnes of dry feedstock per day, and reported that it had been commissioned in 2018–2019.[5]

The centre has also undertaken materials and product research. In 2019, The Times of India reported on the development at STCB of a bitumen formulation designed to reduce emissions during asphalt production and paving, as well as research into lower-emission materials.[6]

STCB has hosted Shell's E4 programme for energy-technology startups. In 2019, Business Standard reported that companies participating in the programme were working on technologies including battery management, electric mobility, energy storage and satellite propulsion, with access to facilities at STCB.[7]
