editDoes the etymology mean "Eastern Sound (inlet)"? --Menchi 11:42 16 Jun 2003 (UTC)
- I think it's actually more like "East of Sound/Inlet" since there's no "Western Sound/Inlet", but there's a "West of Sound/inlet". The modern standardized Swedish name is exactly like you say, but the etymology has become slightly corrupted due to a misinterpretation of the dialectal name of the site the city was built on.

- "corrupted due to a misinterpretation of the dialectal name" please develop your discussion. What is the original dialectal name according to you and where did you find this information? / Olof Edler, May 29 2008
- Well åster in Jamtish means östligare in Swedish (probably easterly in English, directly translated: more east). I think that's what he refers to. Or the fact that åsta means öster om (east of) and that the name was corrupted from Jamtish åsta to Swedish öster. The sound between Rödön (a peninsula) and Frösön is the historical Västersundet (nowadays Rödösundet) AFAIK. But I'm just as you interested in definite sources. //Heimvennar - divider 16:49, 22 June 2008 (UTC)
- When the town was built, it was given a Swedish name, taken from the location of the settlement. It as never had a Jamtish name. I can clearly tell that Heimvennar does not have Jamtish as his/her mother tongue, since hi/she keeps mixing case and reproject the words he/she have heard to a Swedish standard. Beeing Jamtish speaking from birth, I have never heard anyone say "Åstersånn" when referring to Östersund. In Jamtish, the expression is "Stan" or "The Town", since there is only one town in the entire province. "Åstersånn" must be some homemade back-transformation from the Swedish name Östersund. Also confused when referring to then "Sund" as an inlet, since it's part of, together with "Rödösundet", the outlet. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 83.188.201.188 (talk) 09:41, 22 August 2010 (UTC)

History section
editNeeds to be substantially cut down as it has its own article. Michellecrisp (talk) 13:57, 24 October 2008 (UTC)
- Or alternately, the history page can be considerably extended instead. Cutting away the very reasons as to why the city was founded, e.g. controlling trade, unsuccessful trade regulations and military is not good IMO, which you've done now twice. Along with the fact that Östersund was founded together with other Nordic cities for similar reasons. And I frankly don't see why you delete information regarding clubs, "the city of Good Templars", Jamtli and the Mid Sweden University (just because something can be said regarding other universities doesn't mean it isn't worthy of mention). And some things have been directly translated from Swedish to English, thus spanska sjukans huvudstad became "Spanish flu's capital" and Frösö trivialskola became "Frösö Trivial School". The history section doesn't necessarily have to be short, look at e.g. Belgrade, Venice and Manchester. //Heimvennar - divider 10:27, 25 October 2008 (UTC)
- The article needs a lot of work, it contains excess in some places. Belgrade and Manchester's history section is well referenced. This article has far too little references. Clubs should only be included if they're notable. Michellecrisp (talk) 14:18, 25 October 2008 (UTC)
- I'll have to agree with Michellecrisp, we shouldn't force a very large history section on the reader. Anyone with a keen interest on the history can read it in full in the article created for that purpose. I have also deleted a fair number of images as the article is/was incredibly cluttered. The same should be done to the Swedish article. Njaelkies Lea (talk) 17:03, 22 December 2008 (UTC)

Government
editNote taht the information about "Government" should not be in this article. Östersund is a non-administrative place, a "tätort" in Swedish. It is the seat of Östersund Municipality. The municipality has an article of its own and everything about politics should be in that article, as the town is not an administrative entity of its own. It is the same with all the 1,940 urban areas in Sweden. Only the 290 municipalities of Sweden, covering the whole territory of the country, are local government entities. --Muniswede (talk) 18:49, 29 January 2009 (UTC)
The Bear Tooth project
editIsn't the Bear Tooth (Björntanden) project cancelled due to the financial crisis? // JiPe (217.208.138.58 (talk) 21:51, 31 July 2009 (UTC))
- It is, I removed it. //Heimvennar - divider 11:39, 5 September 2009 (UTC)
