Germany

Could someone who understands German please have a look at the Germany section? It is in very poor English right now and the sole reference in in German. magnius (talk) 16:38, 27 April 2009 (UTC)

This says that a guy and his sister may have been infected after he got back from a trip to Mexico. The two had normal flu symptoms—however, rapid tests showed that neither him nor his sister have A/H1N1. A spokesperson of the hospital said that she didn't know about a third person. By the way, Bielefeld isn't at the Dutch-German border. --Fabian Göttgens (talk) 17:06, 27 April 2009 (UTC)
Here is the section, if you edit it here I'll copy it back into the article Tim Vickers (talk) 17:09, 27 April 2009 (UTC)

In Germany is a suspect case, just at the border with The Netherlands.

The flu is in two men and a woman, who are in isolation in a hospital.

They came back from a trip to Mexico and felt a bit feverish.[1]

Please update the numbers on Germany. The 3 cases mentioned in the initial source are confirmed negative influenza A - so it's not swine flu. Source: http://www.spiegel.de/wissenschaft/mensch/0,1518,621426,00.html. (Headline says All-clear for suspicious swine flu cases). Btw, local hospitals have not seen any "third" person - there have been only two persons quarantained and tested. And the mentioned city, Bielefeld, is not on the German-Netherlands border, it's pretty much central. If you want to specify the localisation, I suggest "in the state of Northrhine-Westphalia". --hilmarwoy 20:58, 27 April 2009 (UTC)

As of April 27, there are three more suspected cases: http://www.spiegel.de/wissenschaft/mensch/0,1518,621618,00.html -- 77.176.79.59 (talk) 12:24, 28 April 2009 (UTC)

Brazil

Brazil already adds up 4 suspects of the Swine Flu. Two are interned in Belo Horizonte with suspicion of swine flu. It rises for 4 persons interned in Brazil with suspicion of swine flu. A couple was interned by suspicion of swine flu in the Hospital of the Clinics of Belo Horizonte, in this Monday (27). According to the General office of Health of Minas Gerais, the couple had spent some days in Mexico and began to present the symptoms of the flu still in the aircraft, which landed during the dawn in the International Airport Tancredo Neves. The two will be subdued to examinations.

The first 2 suspected cases are no longer suspected cases - the pacients showed no signs flu. But yes, we can now talk of (only) 2 suspected in Minas Gerais 189.121.179.143 (talk) 19:33, 27 April 2009 (UTC)

Bosnia and Herzegovina's respone not notable?

From the article:

"Bosnia and Herzegovina

No immediate steps were taken by the government as the swine flu does not seem to be a problem for now. The government officials met in Sarajevo on April 26 and determined that it would not ban any imports of meat."

To me, this response doesn't seem notable for inclusion into the article. What does everyone else think? Cordovao (talk) 19:26, 27 April 2009 (UTC)

Agreed, removed. –Juliancolton | Talk 19:26, 27 April 2009 (UTC)
Thank you. I am also concerned this may not be notable:

"Italy

Italy's agriculture lobby, Coldiretti, warned against panic reaction, noting that farmers lost hundreds of millions of euros due to consumer boycotts during the 2001 mad cow scare and the 2005 bird flu outbreak" Cordovao (talk) 19:39, 27 April 2009 (UTC)

Plus:

"Argentina

All passengers arriving to the country from Mexico and United States must fill out a form to be located in case they show symptoms of flu according to an Epidemic Alert order issued by The Ministry of Health." Cordovao (talk) 19:48, 27 April 2009 (UTC)

I'm a bit more hesitant to remove that, as it includes actual info (rather than simply "Nothing has been done here"). –Juliancolton | Talk 19:50, 27 April 2009 (UTC)

Addition necessary: Portuguese Health System reaction

Two women who arrived from Mexico to Lisbon on the 27th of April 2009 with flu-like symptoms are considered to possibly have Swine Flu. However, they have not been tested for the strain, and have been told, during a visit to the hospital, to stay home for 10 days.

New Zealand? No one has died there. Why is this even noteable? Wallie (talk) 12:59, 28 April 2009 (UTC)
Because New Zealand's location effectively changes the disease from an epidemic to a pandemic at least as far as the Pacific Theatere is concerned. Furthermore No one has died in anywhere but Mexico, but the response seems notable. --PigFlu Oink (talk) 13:02, 28 April 2009 (UTC)
In the last outbreak in 1918 of the flu, 8900 people died in New Zealand. There is no article about this. Sometimes I wonder about the balance in Wikipedia. Wallie (talk) 14:13, 28 April 2009 (UTC)
All this means is that no one has gotten around to writing about New Zealand in the 1918 flu... yet. rootology (C)(T) 14:18, 28 April 2009 (UTC)
I wouldn't hold my breath. I guess that people now think that this 2009 version is more important. It is quite sad really. Wallie (talk) 14:33, 28 April 2009 (UTC)
There is nothing sad about this. Is there any value to Wikipedia to your being so negative for no good reason? People write what they're interested in, or what's right in front of them. This is Human Nature 101 going back hundreds of years. When someone is interested in a red link that doesn't exist, they'll write it. It not existing today isn't a fault of any of us or "Wikipedia" or "Web 2.0" or any such thing. If you have something helpful to add to the creation and growth of this article, please help out. Otherwise, pages you have an interest in improving are --> that way. rootology (C)(T) 14:36, 28 April 2009 (UTC)
Can't see how to edit the table. NZ still has only 3 confirmed cases, not the 14 as some German source indicated. The others are only confirmed as Influenza A1, but this may change soon. rossnixon 11:43, 29 April 2009 (UTC)

Outbreak evolution in New Zealand:
  Confirmed cases
  Unconfirmed or suspected cases

New Zealand now has 4 confirmed cases. However no details have been provided about the new confirmed case other than that it is not one of the Rangitoto college group. The MOH has also stopped providing a geographic breakdown of the figures, so we don't know what geographic area the new confirmed case is in. Hence the map is now out of date as there may now be a confirmed case outside Auckland. Furthermore we have no way of updating it. We may be forced to consider deleting it.Hawthorn (talk) 09:09, 1 May 2009 (UTC)

Situation now worse with 5 confirmed cases. Map deleted from page. Included here in case someone wants to update/resurrect it.Hawthorn (talk) 05:55, 4 May 2009 (UTC)
Six confirmed cases now as of update 22. However we have more information. It looks like the confirmed cases are in Auckland and in Hawkes Bay, so there should be two red areas on the map. No info on where the probables and suspecteds are though, so we still don't know which areas to shade yellow. Hawthorn (talk) 10:55, 4 May 2009 (UTC)

Flu cases in Sweden turn out not to be swine influenza

Negative test results on suspected swine influenza Today, Monday April 27, the Infectious Diseases Institute analyzed three samples from suspected cases of swine flu, all with a negative result. Two samples analyzed during the day at Malmö General Hospital, MAS, has been negative. Three of the sampled individuals have visited Mexico (one woman in 29 years, two men of 52 and 65 years) and a U.S. person (69-year-old man). For the fifth person has SMI no information on visiting country or age.

Map of Germany

The map of Germany is pointless at best and misleadingly alarmist at worst. There is one confirmed case in Nuremberg, with the result that all of Bavaria is now colored red on the map as if the entire state were somehow infected. I removed it, but it was restored without even the courtesy of an explanation in an edit summary. Thoughts? —Angr 09:23, 29 April 2009 (UTC)

It should remain red, there is one confirmed case, therefore it should be red. Consider the Canadian provinces, the larger of which are 3x the size of Germany, but they're colored red. Or the world map, where the US and Canada are the size of Europe, but they're colored red, while the entirety of Europe isn't. 76.66.202.139 (talk) 12:09, 29 April 2009 (UTC)
My point was not that Bavaria shouldn't be colored red, but that the map shouldn't be there at all. But now I see there are similar maps for many other countries, so either they should all go or they should all stay. I still think all of them are misleading as both confirmed and unconfirmed cases are so sporadic (at least outside Mexico). It's not like it's spreading across communities of people in countries like Germany and Canada. —Angr 12:19, 29 April 2009 (UTC)
All of the maps are painted like that, per state not per city so I don't see the point of this complaint.--Avala (talk) 13:22, 29 April 2009 (UTC)

Singapore

False alarms and hysteria?

As of today (2. May 09), the Singaporean Health Ministry has informed all students at university that they must take thermometer measurements prior to entering exam halls from now on and are not permitted to enter if high. As students are not able to re-take any exam under any circumstances here, this means that they would have to fail that particular exam. - I know this is not really headline news, but I just felt like sharing the madness that the hysteria has caused around the world. There are no reported cases or probable cases in Singapore so far. Just thinking about thousands of students taking exams, I bet at least a few will have higher temperatures, and that they have to go through all this nonsense is just ridiculous. - In fact, knowing this country this is one of the typical measures taken to create fear in order for the citizens to rally around 'the' party in protection.

Any thoughts on mentioning something about the side-effects to all this hysteria? Unnecessary slaughtering of 300,000 pigs in Egypt and the like. (apparently they belonged mostly to Coptic Christians.) Or look at the number of possible cases in the UK - skyrocketing out of angst. This could all turn into a classical case of ringing the fire alarm when there is no fire. - And next time no one will believe it (and more to the point, if this virus mutates by the next season, public response will be lower).

  • update: This measure applies to all facilities run by the Education Ministry and on top of this all students in the entire country are 'required' to submit a temperature measurement on a daily basis. —Preceding unsigned comment added 08:20, 2 May 2009 (UTC)

Thailand

1. Can we make a separate article for Thailand akin to Mexico, US, UK and Spain. If this is not necessary can we please reduce the size of the section.

2. Thailand so far as a sum total of 2 suspected cases. No one has died, no one has been confirmed of having it. Why then is this section growing and growing each time I come back. Someone is adding every tiny little bit of excruciating detail that is totally unnecessary.

3. The sections on France (4 confirmed), Germany (9 confirmed) Denmark, Austria, Ireland and Netherlands all have one confirmed case - added together all of those sections are still shorter than that of Thailand which has zero. Can we therefore delete most of the Thailand section, or if someone is adamant about keeping it then create a separate article for it.

I was not going to push for this, but as I have noticed that it has been expanded regularly it needs some cleaning up done to. Sections need to be kept in proportion. --Lexxus2010 (talk) 06:00, 5 May 2009 (UTC)

Central America and the Caribbean

I am reversing one more time the inclusion of this region within North America. First, such change should have been discussed here before editing, I as requested in my previous rv. Furthermore:

  • Nowhere in the list it says countries are organized by continents. Countries are organized by regions, and Central America and the Caribbean are one of such regions, widely used by international organizations.
  • The article has a worldwide view, therefore if the definition of continents is different by language and regions (see Number of continents]) it is better to organized the countries by regions to avoid the different interpretations.
  • As explained in the link above, in most countries in Latin America the Americas are divided in three sub-continents, North, Central, and South America.

Would the editors be so kind to continue the discussion here before putting Central America back into North America.--Mariordo (talk) 13:54, 17 May 2009 (UTC)

  • See also the box with the different subdivisions regarding the Americas.--Mariordo (talk) 14:16, 17 May 2009 (UTC)
    • And I am reversing it yet again. Per North America and its many referenced citations, the inclusion of Central America and the Caribbean in the North American continent is common in English; what other languages may include or exclude from the continent is irrelevant in this, an article in the English Wikipedia. Even the United Nations indicates this (also in French): "The continent of North America (003) comprises Northern America (021), Caribbean (029), and Central America (013)." To do otherwise places undue weight on relatively uncommon notions in English, against Wikipedia's neutral point-of-view policy. That is not to say that other perspectives are not appreciated, but they must be put in perspective: all the articles you've linked to indicate essentially the same thing regarding content (e.g., the lead of the 'continent' article). And, actually, the article indicates upfront that the countries are organized alphabetically by continents/regions. You are not a consensus. So, stop trying to push your viewpoint down our throats, and await a consensus before reverting again. Bosonic dressing (talk) 14:58, 17 May 2009 (UTC)
      • Could you be more polite and civilized? You are the one who did the change without providing justification and did not answer my request to discuss it here. Please follow Wiki etiquette and wait for other opinions before rv based only on your opinion. Did you notice the heading says continent/region? (I did not include "region" by the way). I will follow proper etiquette, so I will wait for others to have a saying.--Mariordo (talk) 15:08, 17 May 2009 (UTC)
        • Actually, I did provide a justification in my initial edit summary: "in English, Central America is usu. a region of North America & definitely not a continent in any language", which you seemed content to diminish through your revert. Like, why should such a change have been discussed on the talk page first? It is not controversial, based on aforementioned reasons. And, of course I know about the 'continent/region' reference: with that edit, I added it. I have since expanded on this talk page with commentary. Frankly, if you wish to be treated with more civility, you should not have reverted based only on your opinion. Of course, if a consensus of opinion asserts otherwise, I will re-evaluate. But, until then, the current arrangement will hold. Bosonic dressing (talk) 15:20, 17 May 2009 (UTC)
          • Summarizing my point. As with Oceania, it is better to keep the original organization of the countries by region and not by country, since there is no universal definition of the continents across languages and across countries. This option avoids controversy or different interpretations.--Mariordo (talk) 16:34, 17 May 2009 (UTC)

Japan map File:H1N1_Japan_Map.svg

The Japan map File:H1N1_Japan_Map.svg (the second version) is incorrect, and this map should be removed. No domestic infection case has been confirmed in Tokyo. This map is now questioned also at Japanese Wikipedia, mainly because Tokyo is categorized mistakenly. Drawing area-grouping maps for certain countries (like this one) may be a good idea, but such a map should not be used at least until it becomes well-verifiable. What is the source for Tokyo? The problem as to this map is not where Narita Airport is located (exactly not in Tokyo, though). I think port-quarantined (i.e. non-domestic) cases are to be excluded from such an area-grouping map. If included, wrong information can be read from the map as if an outbreak had been confirmed in a certain area, only because an international airport is located there. --Dumpty-Humpty (talk) 02:58, 19 May 2009 (UTC)

Couldn't someone from the Japanese Wikipedia have updated it to correct for errors? (ie. What Wikipedia Is) 76.66.202.139 (talk) 03:42, 19 May 2009 (UTC)
I see no reason to exclude quarantined cases, since other countries include these cases in their maps. And non-Domestic cases are also included in those maps, so why should Japan be special? The first death in the US was non-domestic, yet the US got colored black. The cases in Hong Kong began as non-domestic, yet it was colored red. 76.66.202.139 (talk) 03:48, 19 May 2009 (UTC)
Exactly, i did the map, and it was in fact at Narita Airpot, if you see an error you can update it by yourself and stop complaining for no reasons. --Vrysxy  ¡Californication! 05:57, 19 May 2009 (UTC)
Hi. Please note that Narita International Airport (a.k.a. New Tokyo International Airport) is located in Chiba prefecture, NOT in Tokyo metropolitan prefecture. Actually no infected patients found in Tokyo for now. I don't know if or not sates (or prefectures) just having quarantine station at international airport where infection case confirmed are colored red in those for other countries such as the United Sates, but at least the current image having Tokyo in red is obviously wrong. And unfortunately, I don't have a good paint tool to fix it. --Penn Station (talk) 06:24, 19 May 2009 (UTC)
I wish I could fix it, but my paint tool seems not good for the job. Please be sure not to overlook the difference between coloring by governments (as examples shown by 76.66.202.139) and categorizing local districts in one country like Japan with a non-federal government. As a result of nation-run quarantine, Japan became a country whose government confirmed infection cases, and Japan in a world map can be colored as so; but it's of no use coloring a district in Japan because of the quarantined cases: they were not detected by Narita City, and they do not mean that a person in Narita City was confirmed infected. On the other hand, the cases of Kobe City, for example, are the cases of persons in the city, and were detected by the city and were confirmed by the government of Japan as domestic cases. I see no reason to mix up quarantined cases with domestic ones in categorizing municipalities in Japan. --Dumpty-Humpty (talk) 06:59, 19 May 2009 (UTC)
So sorry for the hasty and aggressive comments by a troubled person in ja. I updated the correct version of the image. Japanese ministry, however, is now treating port-quarantined cases, which are not spreading in town, and domestic cases differently; it is "Japan-POV", in other word. Although both cases may treat as same later, we Japanese now need the alternative image. So I uploaded both images from worldwide- and Japan-POV. Thanks. --Y tambe (talk) 07:05, 19 May 2009 (UTC)
Well, I admit my speech here was not always well-refined because I hoped another opinion would come soon on this point. I don't know if it's a global trend to treat quarantined cases and domestic ones equally, but I also think it may be a Japanese point of view to treat the two differently, as Y tambe stated. Thanks all for your opinions. --Dumpty-Humpty (talk) 09:20, 19 May 2009 (UTC)
The map has been fixed and the one that i will be updating will be the first one.--Californication! (talk) 14:10, 19 May 2009 (UTC)
That's good enough. I will update the other one for a while, maybe until either Japanese ministry would change their policy or, unfortunately, the flu would spread to Chiba pref. FYI, one patient was confirmed in Shiga Prefecture.[4] And I ask you to consider the color of Awaji Island to be changed in your next update. It is a part of Hyogo, though there are no patient confirmed in the island (so the color would not be changed in ja version). Use your judgement, please. Thanks. --Y tambe (talk) 02:52, 20 May 2009 (UTC)
On 22 May I've got a tool to handle SVG file; just now I colored Kyoto Prefecture as it got confirmed cases (source), and Awaji Island because Hyogo Prefecture did. Shiga had already been colored as so. (Awaji Island is not treated separately, according to the Japanese text description saying this map shows categorization of prefectures.) -- With regards, Dumpty-Humpty (talk) 02:17, 22 May 2009 (UTC)
P.S. Awaji coloring was undone; I modified Japanese description so that an island can be treated separately.
I will copy this section into commons:File talk:H1N1 Japan Map.svg. Thanks. --Dumpty-Humpty (talk) 05:17, 22 May 2009 (UTC)

Number of suspected cases that are NEGATIVE

The one thing I see missing from the table that would give a ratio indication of the transmission rate of the virus now, is a column to report on the number of suspected cases that are reported to be NEGATIVE. The table over time, depicts the change in status to the number of cases that are postive.

Further, the number of suspected cases that are reported fluctuates a lot more than the confirmed cases. Right now that only shows one side of the story as suspected cases may be removed because it some are erroneous, not becuase it was confirmed negative. So perhaps report the erroneous number as well, if not here on another page. It is vital to understand how many suspected and investigated cases are reporting NEGATIVE. This may obviously be very hard to do as bad news is discovered and spread more than news that does not shock, but reduces the expectation of the event. Prehaps Google Flu Trends can help.

This page is BRILLIANT, it is a fairly accrurate (as fairly can be) and vital number representation of the past week, this can not be found anywhere else. The version history will be (painful) but valuable for someone if the wanted to try to estimated the doubling time of the suspects and confirmed case. That is an important figure. For people and not only Google, to be trending the future, we need to think of the value that this massive community of people can make in realtime, to assiting us to get an informed overview of the current state and future evolution. To ALL technical people out there humanity has a virus and we have no patch, it has spread to multiple subnets and it is spreading within these subnets, it has spread from a subnet to another. AND we are NOT shutting down the gateways. If it does not stop naturely than we have a pandemic already. The network has a virus.

What is the infection ratio, what is the transmission rate, these are not the most important things. These numbers will represent the change, either way, decrease or increase. Someone that knows wikipedia better than I would know if that was possible to do or not.

Thanks

Someone added a different map instead of updating the old one... File:Swine flu Europe Map.png. This now breaks the images across multiple languages, since they use the other image. 76.66.196.85 (talk) 04:52, 23 May 2009 (UTC)
There's also a duplicate available on commons of that dupe... File:Swine flu Europe map.png... which will break more updating linkages, when people get around to updating things. 76.66.196.85 (talk) 05:11, 23 May 2009 (UTC)

Affected Countries?!?

I think we should delete from the list the countries that hasn't report a confirmed case, because as the title says: "Affected countries" and countries that had reported suspected cases aren't affected. Maybe at the end of the list we could me another section that says: Suspected cases or something like that. Or we could change the name of the section. What do you think?

Hello, there is a discussion on extending the legend to 5000+ and 50000+ confirmed cases, please see: en:Talk:2009_swine_flu_outbreak#H1N1_map_by_confirmed_cases.svg

70.29.208.129 (talk) 11:37, 28 May 2009 (UTC)

Extending it to 50 000 is most likely not very much needed at this time I suppose, seeing only two countries have more than 5000 cases, and the chance of any of them reaching 50000+ before the end of next month is not very high, I do not see the need to revolutionize the whole map by adding a new color. If we need to change all the colors to fit in a new one, I am not so sure wether it is a good move at the current time. Notelitten (talk) 20:40, 30 May 2009 (UTC)

Can someone update the Italy map?

70.29.208.129 (talk) 10:22, 28 May 2009 (UTC)

The map has been updated according to the information found under the #italy section in the 2009 swineflu outbreak article, as I only found information about two regions being infected, I have only updated these two. Notelitten (talk) 02:13, 30 May 2009 (UTC)

- I've found a list of infected regions in Italy up to the 27th May. Hope it's of use to someone. I don't really have the time or the no-how to update the map, but hope someone else can! http://www.blogfromitaly.com/swine-flu-in-italy-update-3/ Alexdeangelis86 (talk) 13:02, 01 June 2009 (UTC)

File:H1N1 North America Map.svg

The North American map is missing Greenland. As Iceland, Canada, USA and Denmark all have swine flu, Greenland could conceivably get cases as well. Since Greenland is part of North America, it should appear in gray on this map. 70.29.208.129 (talk) 11:45, 28 May 2009 (UTC)

Do keep in mind that Greenland actually is a separate country, and is considered to be a member of Europe, even though it geographically is a part of North America. I think it should be considered a country, and hence its cases should be individual.

In 1979, Denmark granted home rule to Greenland, with a relationship described by the Rigsfællesskabet, and in 2008 Greenland voted to become a separate country within the Kingdom of Denmark, effective June 2009. -- Greenland article

Notelitten (talk) 14:45, 30 May 2009 (UTC)
It is geographically part of North America, and should appear on the North American map. It is part of NORAD (North American Air Defense Command) with a NORAD base. Its nearest neighbour is Canada. Keep in mind that France has overseas territories in North America as well... St.Pierre-et-Miquelon. That does not change the fact that those islands are part of North America, just as Greenland is, even though politically, they are enjoined to Europe. French Guiana is also politically part of Europe, but it appears on the map of South America. And as for a "separate country"... Mexico, the USA, and Canada are also separate countries, they are not one country, so I don't see what point you're trying to make about that. 70.29.208.129 (talk) 15:52, 30 May 2009 (UTC)

North America

Should a confirmed cases map be made for North America, like Europe and South America do? If one is made, it should incorporate Greenland in the mapped area (even though it has no confirmed cases at the moment. It is still part of North America). 07:57, 31 May 2009 (UTC)

The updated North America map now contains Greenland, so if a confirmed cases map is made, it should also contain Greenland. If someone is looking for the blank, it is at File:North America second level political division 2 and Greenland.svg 70.29.208.129 (talk) 23:45, 31 May 2009 (UTC)

I think the scale needs adjusting. For one thing "red" as 30+ looks out of place, for another, 20+ and 30+ seems too close together. I suggest using the standard key (1+/5+/50+/500+/5000+) or the magnitude modified key (1+/10+/100+/1000+) or the 5x key (1+/5+/20+/100+/500+/2000+/10000+) or the doubling key (1+/5+/10+/20+/50+/100+/200+/500+/1000+/2000+/5000+/10000+)

Romania

There are 5 swine flu cases in romania currently. Could someone update the main page?

Cantacuziono Institute representatives declared on Monday that there were two more cases of swine flu in Romania: a 28 year-old woman, who recently returned from New York, and her mother.

The patients are in a good physical shape for the moment, according to the doctors. They started an epidemiologic investigation to find out who else has been in contact with the two women.

There are five confirmed cases of swine flu infections in Romania. The newest two are not related with the first three. The first swine flu case from Romania was announced on May 27. A 30 year-old woman, also returned from New York, was tested positive for AH1N1 virus. Several hours later, two members of her family were diagnosed with swine flu. english.hotnews.ro/stiri-top_news-5765632-two-new-swine-flu-cases-confirmed-romania —Preceding unsigned comment added by 79.116.84.27 (talk) 14:09, 2 June 2009 (UTC)
