Talk:2017 March for Justice

Can the individual parties be named as "the opposition" as it was directed towards the Turkish government?

edit

I know that all of the parties "opposed" are the government but isn't it misleading to add those parties specifically to the infobox? --1.55.183.244 (talk) 11:42, 11 July 2017 (UTC)Reply

No, MHP and Ak Parti leadership basically called them terrorists, and said it was a coup attempt. Even if there was no violence, the leadership of these parties made a lot of comments that were published throughout the duration of the march, and they made those comments as President, Prime Minister, Justice Minister and Chairman of MHP. The only reason there is no party affiliation for the marchers is because Kilicdaroglu made a specific point of marching without any party insignia, and this was widely reported by the press. Are those pictures relevant?

edit

There are some pictures at tr:Adalet_yürüyüşü - are those from the event discussed here? --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 18:07, 11 July 2017 (UTC)Reply

No this link is for a prior event, the 2017 march on Vikipedi is a translation of this article. Seraphim System (talk) 20:20, 11 July 2017 (UTC)Reply

I've added both of the 2017 March for Justice pictures from the commons to the article and I've requested some pictures from one of CHP's photographers.--❣Paseynmsg 23:23, 15 July 2017 (UTC)Reply

I reverted them, photos should have captions please see WP:CAPTION for more guidance on this before reposting them. Seraphim System (talk) 23:58, 15 July 2017 (UTC)Reply
@Seraphim System and Paseyn: I see we now have pictures, thank you. Could you perhaps consider creating at least a stub for the mentioned prior event? It would be good to have few sentences in English to avoid confusing people (like me). --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 12:09, 17 July 2017 (UTC)Reply

Foreign reactions?

edit

Seems like foreign reactions to this march are limited to none. I tried finding some for the reaction section but could not find any. Any help?--ZiaLater (talk) 09:55, 17 July 2017 (UTC)Reply

I am having the same problem. All I could find about the U.S. reaction was this:

The US Consulate issued a security message asking American citizens to exercise caution as “terrorists have targeted political rallies in the past, and that demonstrations and large events intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and escalate into violence.”

Not sure if this is worth including. There was also one french news report that had an opinion from an analyst, but this was not widely reported in any other sources (I reviewed most of them when creating the article for due weight) - and it is not a formal statement from a government. I did not even notice this until you pointed it out, but the sources seem to be limited to the words of those who participated in the March, and internal reactions within Turkey. I'll review this. Mike Christie (talk - contribs - library) 10:48, 28 February 2018 (UTC)Reply

  • Not an issue for GA, but there are two dead links you may want to fix: [1] and [2].
  • Why is "state of emergency" in quotes?
  • I think the start of the "Background" section assumes more knowledge from the reader than they might have. Everything in the lead should be in the body, so I'd expand the background a little more: There was a coup attempt in 2016 which failed; this was followed by a state of emergency and government crackdown, including... and so on.
  • Can we get a link or explanation for "FETÖ"?
  • The quote from The Guardian is a little short for a blockquote; indenting it like that also gives it the impression of authority, which we have to avoid in a topic like this. I think it would be better as an inline quote, with the paragraph combined with the next two.
  • The march began in Ankara on June 15, 2017 after CHP member Enis Berberoğlu was sentenced to 25 years in prison: per the source, this is incorrect; the march began the day after Berberoğlu was arrested. We should also avoid giving the impression the march is directly connected with Berberoğlu. There's a quote in the source calling it "the last straw", which could be used to connect Berberoğlu to the march. As it stands we have a full paragraph of details about what happened to Berberoğlu, which seems excessive; he's an example of government repression, but only incidentally connected to the march. If you're going to give details of the sorts of arrests that prompted the march, it should be of arrests that occurred before the march was organized.
  • The paragraph starting "In an opinion piece" is repetitive; I'd eliminate the direct quote, and add the additional bits from it to Kılıçdaroğlu's list in the next sentence.
  • I'm not crazy about the Salt March comparison. One source simply mentions the distance; the other refers to it as a "grand comparison", implying it's a bit overblown.
  • The tense needs fixing in a couple of places in the "March" section now that its in the past: "Marchers have reported" -> "Marchers reported" and so on. And do we really need a note that there was hot weather and rain?
  • Protestors gave many different reasons: this sort of thing might be better in the "Background" section.
  • Information about the coup attempt and crackdown is repeated unnecessarily in the "March" section.
  • Shouldn't the "counter-demonstrations" information be in the "Reactions" section?
  • There are a lot of direct quotes in the "Maltepe rally" section; quotes are for illustration, and I would think most of these could be reworded. I don't see much in Kılıçdaroğlu that looks quotable enough to retain in his words.
  • Similarly for Erdoğan's and others' comments in the next section, though the "F-16" quote is probably worth keeping.

Seraphim System, are you planning to work on this? If there's no response I will fail this in another week. Mike Christie (talk - contribs - library) 10:57, 7 March 2018 (UTC)Reply
