Riots not restricted to Haryana

edit

Clearly these are not just Haryana riots as Punjab also saw riots as well as New Delhi. It may spread elsewhere as well. So Haryana Riots is not accurate and needs to be reconsidered for a more precise and inclusive article title. werldwayd (talk) 13:35, 26 August 2017 (UTC)Reply

Bullets vs pellet use

edit

Why is use of bullets vs pellet not deemed important for mention in article? It has been covered in National Newspapers like timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/chandigarh/panchkula-war-like-situation-had-to-be-dealt-with-like-that-hc/articleshow/60284806.cms and www.tribuneindia.com/news/haryana/hc-if-indulging-in-nonsense-have-to-be-shot/458520.html

Haryana police hesitated to shoot Jat rioters in Jat reservation agitation but they freely used bullets to kill 38 low caste Dera rioters. You can see on YouTube video Wy0KzfdXxyM how a Dera supporter was shot dead by police for throwing just one stone at them. So lawyers brought this as matter of use of excessive force by police. Even if high court rejected their demand it is an important matter. So please let 2 sentences on this remain in article. Thanks. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.69.142.96 (talk) 16:13, 30 August 2017 (UTC)Reply

The report had quoted Dr Sunil Ghambir, senior medical officer (SMO) of a Panchkula hospital, where a team of doctors had performed the autopsies, as saying:
“All the persons who died lost their lives to gunshot wounds — most on the upper part of their bodies and few in the back.  We cannot tell how many were shot in the head, chest and back, but all of them died to bullet shots.’’

Back up a bit more and give more context

edit

The background of this article needs to back up a bit more and give a deeper context. The background should clearly explain who Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh is, why he is so popular and what happened to result in him being charged and tried for rape in the first place. How do his supporters view these allegations, and the charges against him, for these protests to be happening at all. The article shouldn't just drop the reader into the situation on the day of the verdict but should give some context around the trial and any associated controversy in the preceding trial or the original allegations that might have been perceived as being unfair, unjust, politically motivated, or unacceptable to the supporters. The additional background should address the reasons why his supporters felt the need to assemble in the first place. For example: Did his fanatical supporters believe he could do no wrong? So the allegations couldn't possibly be true, despite all the evidence of what happened. Also, what did these protests intend to accomplish, release of their leader or something else? - Cameron Dewe (talk) 11:40, 12 May 2021 (UTC)Reply

A look at the media coverage in the aftermath of the violence indicates how brutal the police action was. The report had noted that the post mortem done on the deceased had confirmed that they all had bullet injuries. Moreover, these people were shot either in the head, in the chest or in the back. Additionally, 267 people sustained bullet wounds.
Following the violence, the followers of the Dera had filed a petition in the Punjab and Haryana high court in March 2018 in which they had claimed that the actual death toll was much higher. The eight petitioners had claimed that 200 Dera followers were killed in Haryana police action during the violence. They also accused the Haryana government of not issuing death certificates to the families of the deceased in order to hide the actual death toll.
