Suggestion to merge with Jean Sibelius

edit

There was a Mergeto tag on this page, suggesting merging with Jean Sibelius. It was dated November 2006 and there has been no discussion about it on the linked talkpage in the intervening months. I have now amplified this article and consider that the idea of a merge is no longer relevant, so I have removed the Mergeto tag. - Euchiasmus 09:50, 4 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

I wonder if she is notable enough for an article. She can’t acquire notability from her parents, siblings or spouse. She was a devoted wife and mother, and no doubt a lovely person, but is that enough? She is credited as co-writer for 3 books, but they all seem to be about Sibelius and it’s likely she had a very minor role to play as far as the writing goes. These do not make her a recognised author, and we don’t have her in any writing categories.

Had she never married Sibelius, nobody would ever have heard of her. US First Ladies etc, like it or not, do become notable in their own right by virtue of who they marry. The same is not true of composers and their spouses.

Just thinking about some other composers’ spouses/partners whose names are generally known to the musical world, and for whom we have separate articles:

With two exceptions (Constanze Mozart and Antonina Milyukova), these ladies and 1 gentleman all achieved notability in their chosen fields. In some cases they became better known and had more successful careers because of their association with the composer, but they still achieved things outside of that.

I note that the following do not have articles:

  • Bartok: Ditta Pasztory (deserves an article)
  • Rachmaninoff: Natalia Satina (does not deserve an article)

So, I’m really struggling to get a sense of Aino Sibelius’s notability. I suggest it be merged with her husband’s article. -- Jack of Oz [your turn] 00:30, 21 October 2011 (UTC)Reply
