Erie Triangle

edit

Jengod, are you sure about your mention of the Erie Triangle? I thought Western New York at that time was not part of the state of New York (U.S. state) yet (c.f. Holland Purchase, Phelps and Gorham Purchase), but of course I may be mistaken. Was it truly Andrew Ellicott who participated in this survey, or was it his brother Joseph Ellicott? Do you have a source for this? (If it was indeed Andrew, the article on Joseph might need correction, as it states "He also extended the New York - Pennsylvania border westward.") I believe I got the surveyors' names from the WPA history of the city. As for what was where, the best explanation I ever got of this is that there were sort of two layers of land possession: There were the various countries that claimed that various swaths of various lands were their territory, but the local Native tribes owned the land. Anyway, I was thinking of the original royal grants. Let me reorder the book from the library, and do some Googling, and see what I come up with. jengod 18:44, August 12, 2005 (UTC)
