General Criticism

edit

I don't mean to hurt anybody's feelings, but this article seems both too wordy and not definitive enough. For example, what is the "Avesta," let alone the "Younger Avesta"? What is "Yasna"? In "The Younger Avesta" the narrative is rambling and reads a lot like highlights from a particularly florid videogame. A videogame I've never heard of, or played. What is "Yasht"? "Vendidad"?

Let's start over and try telling me/us about Angra Mainyu from scratch (haha getit). But seriously. It's important to understand that this is an encyclopedia, and if I'm looking up an article it probably means I don't already know the content of that article. I would really like to know more about Zoroastrianism, the culture[s] from which it arose, and about Angra Mainyu, but I can't cut through this article without looking up just about every third word in it. Help, please: someone who knows this stuff?

Etymology

edit

??? --Pawyilee (talk) 17:42, 22 July 2012 (UTC)Reply

"Destructive spirit," which is in the article, though not labelled as the etymology. It is a little more clear in this line from the section In Zoroaster's revelation:
In the one instance in these hymns where the two words appear together, the concept spoken of is that of a mainyu ("mind", "mentality", "spirit" etc.) that is angra ("destructive", "inhibitive", "malign" etc.).

I'm removing two allegations connecting Spenta with Spitama And Angra with Angiras

edit

The allegation is that these are "clearly" related. No. They're not clearly related. I would like to see a scholarly reference backing that up.72.191.211.45 (talk) 05:07, 27 June 2014 (UTC)Reply

Pop culture section?

edit

I think it should be noted in some form that Angra Mainyu appears in the Fate series as an antagonist. http://typemoon.wikia.com/wiki/Avenger_(Fate/hollow_ataraxia) — Preceding unsigned comment added by ChlorineTrifloride (talkcontribs) 13:27, 15 June 2018 (UTC)Reply

Wikia sites are not reliable sources, because anyone can edit them (Wikipedia is not considered a reliable source for that reason, among others). Ian.thomson (talk) 13:29, 15 June 2018 (UTC)Reply
Are you kidding? Lots of pages refer to the well-known series of Fate, known for it's heavy inspiration of mythological contents, without have any sources attached to it! (example: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cultural_depictions_of_Medusa_and_Gorgons) Also, when references are actually spoils, difficult to see it elsewhere than wikia and yet, you reject it preferring avoiding truth over some "reliable sources"?? Just do your research, play the game, I don't know, but remember that lots of pages have far less reliable source and yet are still present on Wikipedia. I'm adding it to the article. Bakaba (talk) 04:42, 9 November 2019 (UTC)Reply
@Bakaba: Are you kidding? Mistakes elsewhere on the site don't justify further mistakes, no matter how much of a fan you are of the series!
You need to do your research, including our standards on citing reliable sources for claims instead of telling people to look up the info for your claims. Or, WP:Assume good faith, instead of making asinine conclusions like deciding that a user wants to "avoid truth." It's a fucking video game, get over yourself.
And again, failures elsewhere do not justify new failures. Ian.thomson (talk) 04:54, 9 November 2019 (UTC)Reply
It's not about being a fan or something. Besides, I didn't say I don't have sources - Actually, I have one.(Official site; can you do better?) But, what about the other page I mentioned? You'll delete any unsourced infos just because of this? Thousand of pages actually contain stuff about Fate that is unsourced. You'll delete all those mentions? Also "Wikia is not a reliable source"? Well, it have sources on it's own, good news! Bakaba (talk) 05:04, 9 November 2019 (UTC)Reply
@Bakaba: Except that you're clearly doing this because you're a fan, not because you care at all about how this site works. If it was the other way around, you'd be asking questions like "what sort of sources are needed?" instead of pushing to get your favorite game mentioned come hell or high water.
The official site doesn't demonstrate that the game's use of the character is regarded as noteworthy.
Asking me to clean up other messes does not justify letting you make another mess. You've done nothing to contribute to world peace, so would you condone me murdering someone? Same (il)logic.
Wikia is not a reliable source. The community has nailed that coffin shut five times. Anyone who has a basic understanding of what constitutes a reliable source knows that. Ian.thomson (talk) 05:18, 9 November 2019 (UTC)Reply
Are you serious right now? YOU don't care about Wikipedia! I linked my content, you can't delete it, it's against the rules. The article I linked revert back to this page, there's no way you are allowed to do that. What's wrong with you? You don't know how Wikipedia works or what? Stop reverting linked contents. Bakaba (talk) 05:29, 9 November 2019 (UTC)Reply
@Bakaba: Link to said rule. Show me the rule. There is no such rule! Ian.thomson (talk) 05:44, 9 November 2019 (UTC)Reply
You know what, I have a great idea. You see the page I mentioned? (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cultural_depictions_of_Medusa_and_Gorgons) I will delete all unsourced content(page will have to be merged since it will only have a few lines left). If you revert what I'll do, you agreed with me and have no reason to delete my content on this page. If you don't, I'll accept the revert. (and add a source so you can't delete it) Bakaba (talk) 05:47, 9 November 2019 (UTC)Reply
@Bakaba: Show me the rule that says you can't removed blue linked content. If you're serious about your actions there, you'd revert your last edit in this article -- clean up the mess you made before trying to tackle other articles. Ian.thomson (talk) 05:50, 9 November 2019 (UTC)Reply
Okay, you do not seem to understand, logic is beyond you, huh? Do you know what Wikipedia is for? Do you understand the purpose of it? No? Fine. You want war, you'll get war. (I suggested a pacific way to resolve this, and you declined it. Wikipedia is corrupt as hell, wow.) Beware of alt accounts. (You wanted the rule? Here it is: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Citing_sources#Dealing_with_unsourced_material (then consider FIDING REFERENCES YOURSELF ; So if you're unhappy, go source it yourself, don't delete it before verifying) Bakaba (talk) 06:11, 9 November 2019 (UTC)Reply
@Bakaba: Oh, look, all the entries that didn't have non-primary sources were removed! You're welcome! Even got rid of that Fate entry on there! What bluff are you gonna try now?
See WP:BURDEN -- if you add information, you need to cite your source to begin with instead of making other people do your homework.
Wikipedia is not a battleground and if you keep acting like it is, you can be shown the door. Your definition of a peaceful solution was making other people clean up after you!
And you still haven't shown me the rule where it says you can't remove stuff that has a link. Ian.thomson (talk) 06:30, 9 November 2019 (UTC)Reply

Angra MainyuAhriman – Most academic sources use the name "Ahriman", e.g. Encyclopedia Iranica [1], Cambridge history of Iran [2], etc ...---Wikaviani (talk) (contribs) 21:38, 22 January 2019 (UTC)Reply

  • Support; I thought the Wikipedia article of this was already named Ahriman. The name of Ahriman is way more popular, quite significantly actually. This is pretty much a no-brainer. --HistoryofIran (talk) 14:16, 24 January 2019 (UTC)Reply
  • Support; Jstor search: "Angra Mainyu" gets 272 hits, "Ahriman" gets 1,919. Google.books search: "Angra Mainyu" gets 26,100 hits, "Ahriman" gets 303,000. And just to be sure: "Angra Mainyu Zoroastrian" gets 10,300 hits in google.books, "Ahriman Zoroastrian" gets 25,500. - LouisAragon (talk) 11:17, 25 January 2019 (UTC)Reply
