removed warning of scam as unsubstaniated
editI have removed an edit which states this article is bait for a scam as it was unsubstantiated. If there is evidence of this, the correct process is to place the article under "speedy deletion" or "articles for deletion". MurielMary (talk) 19:27, 3 May 2016 (UTC)
‘First openly LGBT astronaut’
editHer being ‘outed’ sounds like someone being jealous and making stuff up. It should be removed. 66.67.99.61 (talk) —Preceding undated comment added 21:25, 2 September 2019 (UTC)
- While the statement seems a little out of place in this day and age, the cited reference does back the claim of her being the "first publicly out astronaut". Rosbif73 (talk) 06:38, 3 September 2019 (UTC)
- Isn't the following line from the Business Inside article edit: "Update (March 25, 2019): Summer Worden, who was married to McClain at the time of NASA's photo shoot, contacted Business Insider by email following the publication of this story. Worden said she is the biological mother and sole legal parent/guardian of the minor." That seems to imply that Worden and/or BI "outted" McClain on March 25, 2019. 75.117.52.10 (talk) 21:43, 24 September 2019 (UTC)
First felony in Space?
editWould she be the first space’s felon? LibIchtnatz (talk) 00:45, 7 July 2020 (UTC)
- It has been reported in reliable sources: New York Times: Anne McClain, New York Times: Allegations Lead to Charges. However, there are opposing views on the matter: McClain wife Charged with Lying about Space Crimes, Estranged Wife Charged with Lying, Summer Worden accused of filing false claim. So if anything is to be added, make sure it is 100% NPOV; since the case seems to be recent and new facts are coming to light every day. Maineartists (talk) 13:01, 8 July 2020 (UTC)
- By definition, someone is only a felon if convicted. McClain was later cleared of charges [1] — Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.34.82.209 (talk) 22:26, 18 October 2020 (UTC)
- The subject is already covered in the Personal life section, citing the fact that she was cleared. Rosbif73 (talk) 07:56, 19 October 2020 (UTC)
Lesbian and LBGT
editAn IP editor keeps changing "This accusation outed McClain as a lesbian, making her the second known LBGT astronaut after Sally Ride" to "This accusation outed McClain as a lesbian, making her the second known lesbian astronaut after Sally Ride", citing MOS:IDENTITY. I don't see any breach of that guideline, in that McClain is identified as a lesbian in the first part of the sentence, whereas the second refers to the claim in the cited reference [2] which says McClain was not publicly out in official NASA communications, although some gay media outlets have followed her career and identified her as lesbian. She is now — albeit involuntarily — the first publicly out astronaut. (Sally Ride, who became the first American woman in space in 1983, was lesbian, but that fact was not revealed until after her death, by her spouse.)
That cite makes it clear that she is the first "publicly out astronaut" – of any gender, i.e. that there are no openly gay male (or trans, etc.) astronauts either. Changing LGBT to lesbian in the sentence totally eliminates that part of the claim. Naturally I won't revert again per 3RR, but I'd be interested if any other editors would like to weigh in here.
