Aroras and Khatris
editThere seem to be many sources that show that these castes are different and mentions them separately in the same sentence. I will list the sources. Can someone who has more context on the castes on the Punjab region of India comment? Thanks LukeEmily (talk) 18:29, 15 September 2021 (UTC)
From the leading newspaper in Punjab. https://www.punjabkesari.in/national/news/arora-society-is-descended-from-lord-rama-810587
Please understand the context. https://books.google.com/books/about/Structure_and_Change_in_Indian_Society.html?id=_g-_r-9Oa_sC
The source clearly addresses the issue and differentiates the "Khatris" from the "Arora Khatris". The latter had immigrated to the upper Punjab from the south of Lahore after the invasion of Sindh by the Arabs. Therefore, for centuries they were socioeconomically inferior to the already settled Khatris.
Yet, most scholars admit that both the groups are of the same ethenic stock. Moreover, intermarraiges between the two groups is a common and old phenomenon. Please note, inter caste marriages are still new in the Indian society.
If you may please care to know, Arora Khatris are more in numbers than all the other Khatris combined.
Arora Khatri and Khatri population combined is estimated to be around 10 million in India.
All the best.
- Thanks. This(population etc.) is good information that we can add to the articles. Please can you add with suitable sources? Also, what is the difference between Aroras and Arora-Khatris? There are some sources (like Malhotra) that say that the Khatris deny the Arora claim that they are Khatris. Is that a resolved issue now (assuming it was a thing of the past only)? Arora is Arora Khatri in short. Some Aroras continue to use their sub-Arora clan names such as Baathla, Ahuja, Juneja, Bathra, Madanpotra, Madaan, Kalra etc. However, others simply write Arora.
There is a huge overlap of clan names. The state of Haryana is where the majority of non-Sikh Khatris (including Arora) reside and form the second most populous group after the (non-Sikh) Jaats. Evident in the official government reports Arora/Khatris is considered a one unit. Similarly, the recent formation of Arora-Khatri welfare board by the Punjab government consists of both Aroras and Khatris (non-Arora Khatris such as Khukhrain.
If we go further in the history of the Aroras, they had settled in Aror from Lahore. This has been published mostly in hindi. After the Arab conquest of the capital of Aror, those who traveled back to Lahore intermingled with Non-Arora Khatris and are generally called the Punjabi Arora (caste Punjabi Khatri). Similarly, Aroras who settled in Multan were called Multani Arora (caste: Punjabi Khatri) so on and so forth Wikieditor1008 (talk) 04:54, 17 September 2021 (UTC)
In short, the issue is resolved. Wikieditor1008 (talk) 04:56, 17 September 2021 (UTC)
As a traditional rule, Aroras only marry within Aroras or Khatris. Within Aroras, they do not marry in the same sub-clan of their father and their mother. Divide and rule policy of the British worked well with the inter-differences between a cohesive units to eventually "divide and rule"
All the best Wikieditor1008 (talk) 05:07, 17 September 2021 (UTC)
An old version
editAn intersting version of the Wikipedia Article on Aroras re-published on academic.com https://en-academic.com/dic.nsf/enwiki/1462558 Wikieditor1008 (talk) 05:16, 17 September 2021 (UTC)
"Aroras (Hindi: अरोड़ा, Punjabi: ਅਰੋੜਾ) (or Aror-vanshis, Aror Bans) are an urban mercantile community of the Punjab and Sindh of Kshatriya origin. They are originally Kshatriyas who later on also resorted to agriculture, industry, services, education and trade. "They are usually fair complexioned and endowed with a good sturdy disposition". They are usually well educated and the community has produced Nobel Lauretes like Dr. Hargobind Khorana and an astronaut like Kalpana Chawla."
Please note Aror Vanshi in short is Aror Vans/Bans simce va and ba are used interchangeably like vihar/bihar, vanvas/banvas/banbas, vaniya/baniya etc in the slang dialect. Aror Vanshi mean from the Vans(literally clan) of Aror (Arut). Wikieditor1008 (talk) 05:29, 17 September 2021 (UTC)
