"First Indigenous" model in Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue Claims

edit

Is this claim only supposed to include Native American/Indigenous Americas models? Not the Polynesians and other peoples considered "indigenous"? Callingbull has not appeared in the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue it seems. While one Canadian-based source (Daily Hive in Vancouver) describes her as the first "indigenous" woman to appear, the official Sports Illustrated website describes her as being an "Indigenous First Nations woman".[1]

Jarah Mariano, a native of Hawaii with native Hawaiian ancestry appeared in the pages swimsuit issue in 2008 and 2009, 14 years before Callingbull. She also identifies as being "Asian Pacific Islander [American]".[2] IDK why she'd identify as a "Asian Pacific Islander [American]" if she didn't have Asian or native Polynesian heritage. Obama doesn't call himself a "Polynesian-American" or "Pacific Islander American" (he was born in Hawaii but doesn't have Hawaiian ancestry). I'm pretty sure there are other models with Native Hawaiian ancestry and/or are natives of Hawaii and identify with their Polynesian heritage who've also appeared in Sports Illustrated. The former (Mariano) has talked about her Native Hawaiian ancestry and she was born and spent her early years in Hawaii! Clear Looking Glass (talk) 04:32, 19 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
