Parents

edit

For some reason, there is a lot of information on her parents than about her. I'm not sure about the accuracy of it. If you have any links, please provide them. As I read, her mother took VRS when they moved to Chennai and her father still manages his businesses, even though he accompanies her everywhere. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 83.140.49.152 (talk) 22:28, 18 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

Edits

edit

Just thought I'd clarify my edits here, as I see it has been reverted once:

  • I have removed the image, because it contains a link pasted on it, thus making it unfit for use on wikipedia.
  • Kochi is the new name of Cochin.
  • Syrian Christianity is not a Jewish tradition. It is 100% Christian. The Jewish link is only that Syrian Christians are believed to be Jewish/Brahmin converts.

I hope the edits are now clarified. -- thunderboltza.k.a.Deepu Joseph |TALK 15:03, 30 April 2006 (UTC) your so niceReply

Filmography

edit

Movie "Chennaiyil Oru Mazhai Kaalam (2007)" will not feature Asin in the lead. Since she is busy with couple of movies now, director Gautham has choosed Bollywood actress instead of Asin and hence I think the movie should be removed. This is a confirmed news.

Movie "Kaarthika Thirunal Karthikeyan" will not feature Asin in the lead. I had a chat with her personally in the shoots of Pokkiri (AVM Studios) and it seems no one has approached her for the same. This is confirmed one from Asin Fans Network. Also would like to add that we have close contacts with the Actress and can provide authentic news. - Vinay (AsinFans)

Official Site

edit

I am Vinay, webmaster of AsinFans.com! Kindly do not remove the link as the actress herself has given us complete permission to run the site and more over it will be the Official Fan Site for her. If you need more information, contact me on this regard. The site is not complete.. some additions left.

AsinOnline.com seems to be her Official Site, AsinFans.com currently shows no indication of housing her official fanclub with approval of Asin herself or her represantatives. Until such acknowledgements are given, it can only be considered a fansite. Best regards, --Plumcouch Talk2Me 11:31, 29 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

Fair use rationale for Image:Asin.jpg

edit

Image:Asin.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

the correct name in Tamil

edit

..is அசின் தோட்டுங்கல்.which is explained with the edit.Praka123 17:29, 6 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

I don't see the use of Tamil script in this article. She made all her initial big hits in Telugu, then she had many hits in Tamil, now she is concentrated in Hindi, She is not even acting on any current tamil movies. If tamil scripts for her name can be wrote in this article, then why not Telugu and hindi scripts are added. This will make utter confusion for anyone reading this article. Scripts of four languages in one person name. So I think only one language script is enough. Any telugu/ hindi person can write her name in their respective language in this article and make more ambiguity.

I agree that the text should be written in English. However, her initial Telugu movies were not "big hits". She has been most successful in Tamil cinema. Some of her later movies may have been big hits, like Ghajini, which was dubbed and released in Telugu and turned a box-office hit. Unlike her peers Nayanthara and Trisha, Asin never managed to get a good foothold in Tollywood, even after the release of Telugu Ghazini. Miss p r (talk) 14:36, 30 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

Unsourced claims, puffery, POV interpretations

edit

People keep reverting to versions of the article which contain violations of some of Wikipedia's core content policies guidelines: unsourced claims, personal opinions, analysis and interpretation not supported by third party sources and generally puffery. We are writing an encyclopedia, not a personal fan page. -- The Red Pen of Doom 12:47, 6 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

So isn't it better to discuss it here first rather than EDIT WARRING?? ShahidTalk2me 20:14, 7 August 2009 (UTC)Reply
Removal of inappropriate content in violation of our policies is not editwarring.-- The Red Pen of Doom 00:41, 8 August 2009 (UTC)Reply
Really? So let me introduce you to WP:EW: "An edit war occurs when individual contributors or groups of contributors repeatedly override each other's contributions" - this is what edit warring means. "Inappropriate content" is not something which is up to you to decide. You make a great deal of DRASTIC editing in an article that was like this for quite some time. Just go and check the differences. You claim that something is POV, others may say it is not. When a group of editors edit the same article to the extent of turning it all into an edit war, the TALK PAGE should be used. I suggest you guys to go section by section, analyse problematic sentences and come to a final solution. If it is not done, than you are the one who goes "in violation of our policies". 'from the state of Kerala' in intro?

edit

i really wonder whether we need the part the state of Kerala in the very first line;

.. is an Indian film actress from the state of Kerala.
  • Juhi Chawla article's intro doesnt say she is from the state of Punjab.
  • Aishwarya Rai article's intro doesnt say she is from the state of Karnataka.
  • Priyanka Chopra article's intro doesnt say she is from the state of Jharkhand.

In the section Early life and background, it is clearly mentioned that Asin hails from Kerala. Isnt that enough? .Thanks. Arjun (talk) 17:31, 18 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

  2. 26 October 1985 ref=Rediff

File:Asin Childhood.jpg Nominated for speedy Deletion

edit
An image used in this article, File:Asin Childhood.jpg, has been nominated for speedy deletion at Wikimedia Commons for the following reason: Copyright violations
What should I do?

Don't panic; deletions can take a little longer at Commons than they do on Wikipedia. This gives you an opportunity to contest the deletion (although please review Commons guidelines before doing so). The best way to contest this form of deletion is by posting on the image talk page.

  • If the image is non-free then you may need to upload it to Wikipedia (Commons does not allow fair use)
  • If the image isn't freely licensed and there is no fair use rationale then it cannot be uploaded or used.
  • If the image has already been deleted you may want to try Commons Undeletion Request

Arc Sine doesn't have its own article. Hence moving this article for it's sake is no good reason. And i seriously doubt people would want to see some website's numbering system. I am doubting its notability now. That article is simply based on primary sources. And as Vensatry suggests below, "Asin (actress)" would at least be considerable, but not "Asin Thottumkal". Nominator says she is credited that way and hence references should be provided. But even to change to "Asin (actress)" nominator and supporters have to prove that this article is not a Primary Topic. §§AnimeshKulkarni (talk) 06:57, 16 July 2012 (UTC)Reply
You don't have to have an article to be the primary topic. Since it is already covered in an article, asin can redirect to the article that covers arcsine, and a hatnote can be added using {{redirect}}, which is one of the reasons why we have {{redirect}} ; And you yourself have already shown this actor is not the primary topic. -- 76.65.131.160 (talk) 03:42, 17 July 2012 (UTC)Reply

Discussion

edit

Nominator should give supporting references to the claim made as "Asin" gives 165,000,000 Google hits whereas "Asin Thottumkal" gives only 2,340,000. Hence there is no reason to move per WP:COMMONNAME. §§AnimeshKulkarni (talk) 08:27, 10 July 2012 (UTC)Reply

Animesh you need to add quotes in your search text--DBigXray 15:02, 17 August 2012 (UTC)Reply
  • Comment that result is totally NOT what you are claiming. ASIN is a very common identifier used by Amazon.com; "asin" is a very common abbreviation for arc sine; several other people with names "Asin" are also in your results. How does Erminio Asin relate to this person? What about Asin (band)? Indeed, your own search results show that arcsine is possibly the primary topic -- 76.65.131.160 (talk) 04:44, 15 July 2012 (UTC)Reply
  • Comment – The google search result would not be helpful here since "Asin" can generate a lot of results, many of which may not related to the actress. You might go for "Actress Asin". I don't know how she's credited in Bollywood movies (She has hardly done six films there). She is credited as "Asin" in Tamil films (Majority of her films are in Tamil). Also this cannot be the primary topic. So I'd suggest the page be moved to "Asin (actress)". Vensatry (Ping me) 12:59, 15 July 2012 (UTC)Reply
  • Relisting comment To close the discussion, it would be helpful to see evidence that the actress is not the primary topic of this name.--Cúchullain t/c 16:46, 9 August 2012 (UTC)Reply
  • Support move to Asin (actor) or Asin (actress) as I am unaware to whether is a nom to refer to actresses as actors here. But quite obviously, she is not the primary topic. We have different things with this name, including the names of rock bands and mathematical functions. Secret of success (talk) 11:36, 13 August 2012 (UTC)Reply

Religion

edit

There is a conflict between sources regarding Asin's religion. The Times of India says that "she was born in a conservative Roman Catholic Christian family". IMDB says that "She hails from Thottumkal family which is a Syro-Malabar Catholic Nasrani family". Since the article falls under Biographies of living persons, I suggest removing her denomination, until a more reliable source can be found. Her religion can be left as Christianity , since both denominations mentioned in the sources are Christian. 203.191.35.22 (talk) 08:27, 5 December 2012 (UTC)Reply

Both the sources say the same. But in different ways. Let me explain: Roman Catholic is an umbrella term which encompasses 23 autonomous particular churches and one among them is the Syro-Malabar Catholic Church which is an Easter Catholic Church.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roman_catholic#Autonomous_particular_churches
So Asin is a Roman Catholic in general and a Syro-Malabar Catholic in particular. That is why I gave Syro-Malabar Catholic. so that it is understood that she is a Roman Catholic and a Christian. If you have any doubts left, please refer wiki articles on syro-malabar catholic church, roman catholic church in india etc..PalakkappillyAchayan (talk) 18:02, 23 February 2013 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for clearing that up. I wasnt aware of the subdivisions within the Catholic Church. Unfortunately, now the issue is that IMDB is not a reliable source per WP:IRS#Self-published sources (online and paper), especially on a biography article. Is there any better source that states her religion? BigJolly9 (talk) 18:32, 25 February 2013 (UTC)Reply
http://www.telegraphindia.com/1060514/asp/look/story_6217361.asp This source says she is a syrian christian (also known as nasrani or Saint Thomas Christians). We already have a source saying she is from a conservative roman catholic family. So she is a syrian (cast) as well as a catholic (denomination). And Syro-Malabar Catholic is the Syrian Christian Church from Kerala affiliated to the Roman Catholic Church. Thus she is a Syro-Malabar Catholic Nasrani as said in imdb. Hope you understood. I know these may be too confusing for a person not familiar with such terms. Still, if you need better clarity please see the wiki articles related to Saint Thomas Christians. Let me see if i can get more references. As of now the available 3 websites amply certify what I explained. PalakkappillyAchayan (talk) 14:20, 26 February 2013 (UTC)Reply
The source seems fine to me. Maybe you can use the religion and denomination parameters in the infobox to clarify things. BigJolly9 (talk) 21:30, 27 February 2013 (UTC)Reply
edit

I had to use Google to find other uses of ASIN because all "aisn" queries go directly here even though other "asin" articles exist, there is an Asin (disambiguation) page, and even Asin (actress) and Asin Thottumkal redirects. I see there's no consensus to move, but I'm adding a discreet link to Asin (disambiguation). I don't think that should bother anybody, but I see there has been no consensus over moving the page, so just want to say I'm not on taking a side in that, just providing a link so that users don't have to go off-wiki to find out there's other definitions, which surely was not anybodies intention. Mid-sentence citations

edit

@DMacks: My change placed the citation all of two words to the right of the claim. Per the part of WP:TSI that says "[t]he distance between material and its source is a matter of editorial judgment," I strongly disagree that I created an issue.

I'm not going to insult you by leaving you a 3RR warning but if I try again to, as you said, "re-word the Bharatanatyam-dancer sentence," I suspect we'll both end up violating it because I honestly don't know what you're talking about regarding BLP. Sure I have lots of edits but that doesn't mean I won't make mistakes. Can you explain exactly how I (might have?) violated BLP? City of Silver 17:40, 9 November 2024 (UTC)Reply

Let's compare:
  1. "Claim 1,[ref] claim 2."
  2. "Claim 1, claim 2.[ref]"
In #1, the ref is bound solely to claim 1. In #2, the ref is either bound solely to claim 2 or to the whole sentence (claims 1 and 2). The ref only seems to support claim 1 not claim 2. Therefore, styling it in a way that implies it supports claim 2 is {{verification failed}}. That's especially problematic in a BLP article. The TSI example is merely a different cause of the same effect: having simply "claim 1.[ref]" and later inserting "claim 1 claim 2.[ref]" where ref is only for claim 1.
Re-wording or breaking the sentence would be one way to keep the ref constrained to the claim it supports. DMacks (talk) 05:39, 10 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
