Capitalized D in "Del Toro"

Most of the Del Toros that come from Puerto Rico have a capital D when they spell Del Toro. All of Benicio's film credits in the past ten years have credited him with a capital D. The name we are redirected to should be his actual name not one that is spelled in the way that we think it should be spelled. Wikipedia should redirect from Benicio del Toro to Benicio Del Toro, not the other way around.

  • I agree with this. Del Toro is capitalized.--Charleenmerced Talk 15:10, 4 September 2007 (UTC)
  • Not that I want to dig out this issue...but, the correct spelling is Del Toro and not del Toro. There is no better confirmation of this than his own official website, which spells it Del Toro ([1]). Thus, I think we should respect this and go by how the person spells his own name. Further, I have never seen anyone use a non-capitalized del for Del Toro.--Charleenmerced Talk 00:42, 3 October 2007 (UTC)

Public Relations style

His career gained real momentum in 1995 with his breakout performance in The Usual Suspects, where he stole scenes from his more seasoned costars as the mumbling, wisecracking Fred Fenster. The role won him an Independent Spirit Award for Best Supporting Actor, and firmly established him as "the guy to watch."

Doesn't this whole article sound like it was written by his publicist? Needs the weasel words pulled out, I will try but I am editing 3 other Biography pages -- ×××jijin+machina | Chat Me!××× -- 17:18, 14 December 2006 (UTC)

POV

This article needs a rewrite to correct the huge load of POV statements. One of the worst is the sentence which talks about his "smoldering looks". That is someone's opinion and not very encyclopedic sounding. (Ghostexorcist 23:45, 15 January 2007 (UTC))

What was the thing he did with Mercedes-Benz? Was it an "advert" for the SL? 195.92.40.49 15:05, 2 May 2007 (UTC)

Fair use rationale for Image:Del Toro b.jpg

Image:Del Toro b.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

Survey

Since polling is not a substitute for discussion, please explain your reasons, taking into account Wikipedia's naming conventions.
  • Support -Ulla   21:35, 28 August 2007 (UTC)
  • Oppose - I don't agree that an autograph is good enough verification. Cecil B. DeMille would almost never capitalise the "D" in his name, although he was always credited with it capitalised. Del Toro's films all credit him with the D capitalised. Reginmund 00:02, 29 August 2007 (UTC)
  • Strong oppose, his official website capitalises the "D". Frankly I wouldn't place an ounce of faith in a signed photo on ebay. PC78 01:12, 29 August 2007 (UTC)
  • Strong support - the manual of style is very clear that prepositions and the both are lower case, most especially if there's any question. Del, of course, means "of the" and is not capitalized in Spanish, even when used in people's names (e.g., Ana de la Reguera). The Evil Spartan 05:00, 30 August 2007 (UTC)
  • Support, Autographed pictures are not reliable, since there have been many cases where secretaries and family members have signed autogrpah requests for fans. Mickey Mantle at times had the batboy sign baseballs in the dugout. The so called "Official Websites" are usually fansites which are also unreliable. I checked the "Fundacion Nacional de la Cultura Popular" (National Fundation of Popular Culture) of Puerto Rico, which I consider a reliable source, and they have his name with as "del". See: [3]. Tony the Marine 18:54, 2 September 2007 (UTC)
  • Support - I agree that it goes lower case letter, but we couldn't be so sure with a autographed picture. The more reliable source is that given by Tony the Marine so I support this move. Wachapon2 03:07, 3 September 2007 (UTC)
  • Support. - I agree with The Evil Spartan about MOS. See Guillermo del Toro for an example. - Mtmelendez (Talk|UB|Home) 12:13, 3 September 2007 (UTC)
  • Support- firstly, per the Manual of Style guidelines, and secondly because, whenever I see his name in history books and such, it's always Benicio del Toro. His last name is like others: del Valle, de Jesús, etc. --Boricuaeddie 17:23, 3 September 2007 (UTC)
  • Strong Oppose Del Toro is capitalized. I know quite a few Del Toros and they all capitalize Del. This is the current custom. And most importantly, he, his website ([4]), every other link in the World Wide Web([5]), writes is as Del Toro. Who are we to challenge that? One writes another's last name as they do, now how we think it should be written. The reason being that some last names have undergone changes throughtout the years for a reason or another. I think this should not even be a survey. We should not change someone's last name to out spelling's fancy.--Charleenmerced Talk 15:19, 4 September 2007 (UTC)

Discussion

Any additional comments:
  • beniciodeltoro.com wasn't started by Benicio del Toro, isn't maintained by him, and can't be used to contact him.
  • All autographs pictured on the web have a lower-case d, here are eleven: [6],[7] (five readable autographs), [8], [9], [10], [11] and, as already noted, [12].
  • Autographs are normally the final word on how a person's name is spelt. When it isn't so in the case of Cecil B. DeMille, it's because he also wrote an autobiography where he addressed the spelling of his name.

Timeineurope 14:23, 29 August 2007 (UTC)

His official site is exactly that - official. As noted above by others, his film credits all use a capitalised "D", while a quick google search reveals that this is the most common way of wrting his name. Even so, unless you are refering to a specific guideline, I would think that how he signs his name isn't enough to trump WP:COMMONNAME. PC78 23:09, 29 August 2007 (UTC)
At best, the fansite he has given permission to call itself official might show that he accepts the spelling Benicio Del Toro, while his autographs show that he prefers the spelling Benicio del Toro. If the subject of an article accepts two spellings but prefers one, the article should use the spelling they prefer.
Film credits are very often in all caps. When imdb.com says he is credited as Benicio Del Toro, that might simply be someone's interpretation of an on-screen BENICIO DEL TORO. (Also, misspellings do occur in film credits. David Hyde Pierce has been credited as David Hyde-Pierce. Benicio del Toro is, of course, a name that renders itself particularly easily to misspelling.)
Both spellings are very common. WP:COMMONNAME was never intended to mean that articles on living people should use the most common spelling even when the person in question prefers another spelling that is also very common.
Timeineurope 15:40, 31 August 2007 (UTC)
Sorry, but this is just nonsense. His official site is official, the vast majority of others use "Del", and assuming all film credits to be incorrect is just plain wrong. You're making a lot of assumptions about what he prefers based on some pretty flimsy evidence. PC78 12:58, 2 September 2007 (UTC)
The majority of Spanish-language web pages use Benicio del Toro.
Where did I assume all film credits to be incorrect?
Since he always signs his name as Benicio del Toro, of course it can be concluded that he prefers that spelling.
Timeineurope 13:48, 2 September 2007 (UTC)
Wow, does this subject really deserve such a lengthy discussion? Anyway, I think that people should go with what's common in these cases. Besides, if there's some evidence, like someone mentioned here of an autograph, I would take that over any film credit because that's how the artist intends his name to be written. Besides, film credits are most of the time subject to the directors choice of typeface and style. Thief12 14:52, 3 September 2007 (UTC)
Wow this is an unusual discussion, well I can talk from my experience my last name is Del Valle and I have always used the "D" instead of "d". - Caribbean~H.Q. 23:19, 3 September 2007 (UTC)
The above discussion is preserved as an archive of the proposal. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on this talk page. No further edits should be made to this section.

Birthplace

As far as I know, Benicio Del Toro was born at the old Immaculate Conception Hospital in San Germán, Puerto Rico, back in 1967 (there's a newer facility in the outskirts of town that has since replaced the old one). About 95% of all his available bios point to that fact. Somebody (for whom only an IP address is known) is suggesting, via various edits, that since Benicio mentioned once in an interview that he was born in Santurce, Puerto Rico (a subsection of San Juan), the current article should reflect that.

I read that Edward Van Halen did something similar once when he once implied in an interview he was born in Amsterdam, which confused a lot of his biographers. In fact, Edward was born in Nijmegen, in the Netherlands (his older brother Alex was born in Amsterdam, the family later moved closer to Germany to allow father Jan to do music work across the border). Rather than go through a rather extensive explanation on where is Nijmegen located, Van Halen went with the easy explanation, which sometimes makes sense when you're being ask for talking points in a bio. Could be the case here, also.

From what I know, Benicio lived in Santurce from since when he was a small child (about 2, as far as I know) until about the age of 13. However, his entire family was originally based in western Puerto Rico (as a family reunion of sorts that happened during a stop in Mayagüez for his Che movies' Road Show back in January 2009 implied). Short of a birth certificate or Benicio himself correcting the fact, I have no proof, though. What gives? Demf (talk) 21:24, 19 January 2009 (UTC)

Accents

Not sure, but shouldn't there be accents on names & words like Sánchez, Germán & Perpétuo?-Yup.

i've never seen any accents used for his name. Looked in a few places that should have if there were and I didnt see any. If you find an example maybe, but even his own website doesnt show any. Even if there are/were accents used, he doesnt use them now and like other actors that changed their names, his name is now officially "Benicio del Toro"--Billy Nair (talk) 20:12, 7 December 2010 (UTC)

UC San Diego - Pursued a Degree in Business?

In one of the first paragraphs from Benicio's article, there is a sentence, which says something to the effect of the following: After graduating, at the urging of his father, Benicio pursued a degree in Business Administration at the University California San Diego.

I realize I am nit picking here but the only UC School, which has an Undergraduate Program in Business Administration and issues degrees in Business Administration, is CAL, or UC Berkeley. With the exception of CAL, the UCs discontinued their Undergraduate Programs, awarding degrees in Business Administration, over 20 years ago. If one wishes to study Business Administration at the Undergraduate level at a UC school, they will likely study business economics, and obtain a bachelor's degree in Economics. Benicio was very likely pursuing a degree in Economics, or Business Economics with an emphasis in Business Administration.

I did not correct this small error because I do not know with certainty whether he was a candidate for a BA in Economics (as opposed to having been a candidate for an entirely different degree but with an emphasis or focus in Business Administration).

It is a minor detail but if someone knows more about the degree he was pursuing, perhaps they can take the time to make this minor edit.

Survival rate

Anyone know how often he dies vs lives to the end of a movie? I have only seen about 1/2 of his movies, and it seems like he dies in more than half of them (Snatch, Usual Suspects, Sin City, Way of the Gun, etc.). Is there any other actor that has a lower survival rate than he does as one of the main characters? (more than a few lines of dialog) --Billy Nair (talk) 20:47, 22 February 2010 (UTC)

Guarding Benicio Del Toro's page.

There appears to be someone vandalizing Benicio Del Toro's page with outrageous inaccuracies. The latest being that he is a Spanish Sephardic actor, and the descendant of a Sephardic Rabbi from Rhoad Island. There is no validation for this assertion, and it is obviously a false claim. Benicio Del Toro is a Puerto Rican actor and producer with Spanish, Italian and Indian(native inhabitants of Puerto Rico) distant ancestors. Can the author of his page keep an alert eye for intruders. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Castizo123 (talkcontribs) 19:33, 21 July 2013 (UTC)

Inconsistent capitalization

On what grounds are we claiming that "Benicio del Toro" (lowercase 'd') is the more common spelling? This article itself gives Del Toro (capital 'D') as his real surname, and an Internet search reveals plenty of support for a WP:COMMONNAME move to Benicio Del Toro. I don't care all that much either way, but I do feel we should consistently use one or the other. Krychek (talk) 20:03, 15 January 2016 (UTC)
