BISHT was a title given by Kumaon and Garhwal Kingships to nobles. It has come from the word Vishishit,a Sanskrit word that means 'distinguished'. Its a title of Rajputs in the two regions of Uttaranchal. In Ranikhet and Champawat there are non-rajputs as well (Brahmins). Darah-Bisht is a name of a village in Champawat region. lot of other bisht are there in kumoun like Shyotari Bisht, kanyal bisht, manchuari bisht, fartiyal bisht etc — Preceding unsigned comment added by 122.173.148.184 (talk) 12:49, 27 September 2011 (UTC)Reply

Still doesn't explain removal of the Nepal bit. utcursch | talk 20:46, 28 August 2017 (UTC)Reply
Sir i saw that you added the nepal thing again.Asking for a proof that bishts do not exist in nepal is insane.Unlike traditional media wikipedia does not do any actual reserch about the subject or the people concerned so finding a "verifiable" source to say that bishts do not exist in nepal is too much because i cannot do a census in nepal.Sir can you give me proof that life does not exist at the centre of the earth "actual verifiable"data same thing applies here they just coppied the surname that does not make them a bisht like changing my name to clinton wont make me an actual one Up-16 (talk) 11:17, 29 August 2017 (UTC) Moved from user talkReply
@Up-16: A reference in the article clearly states that the surname exists in Nepal. So, asking for a reference that states otherwise is not "insane". Also, in every edit, you introduce some content that is not supported by any of the reference. For example, in your latest edit, you added "holding ties to the choudhary Zamindars in the gangetic plains of Uttar Pradesh from where they orignally migrated to uttrakhand." Please don't add unsourced information. utcursch | talk 11:23, 29 August 2017 (UTC)Reply

BTW, a simple Google search (e.g. "site:linkedin.com Nepal Bisht") proves wrong your claim wrong that "bishts do not exist in nepal". utcursch | talk 11:26, 29 August 2017 (UTC)Reply

Oh sir now linkedin is a verifiable source but l devbhumi uttrakhand and ancestry and geni.com are not

+the book clearly mentions that for improvement in social status the rautes coppied high class rajput surnames does it not Up-16 (talk) 12:09, 29 August 2017 (UTC)Reply

zamindar and thokdar are the same thing and the book mentions that there are only 4 rajput surnames present in uttrakhand negi, chaudhary ,bisht and one more and the second book thtough which you support your nepal fact sir states that these the raut people are "jungli" ie uncivilised but rajputs belong to a varna in the society which clearly states that they are civiled making another distinction between those hunter gathers and the civilised uttrakhand society Up-16 (talk) 12:13, 29 August 2017 (UTC)Reply
ANOTHER BREAKTHROUGH!!! sir the book (ramilla bisht one ) clearly states that bishts were thakurs and if you see wiki for thakurs you see that thakurs in the old days were zamidaars and in the indian government abollition of zamidaari act kumaon and garhwal you see that zamidaari existed in uttrakhand and therefore it proves the fact that bishts were zamindarrs.

@Up-16: The article does not cite LinkedIn as a source. It cites a book, which clearly states that the Bisht surname has been adopted by certain groups in Nepal. My mention of LinkedIn was reply to your claim that "bishts do not exist in nepal".
If I understand correctly, your argument is that the surname "Bisht" originated as a title for zamindars, and because the Nepalese people were not zamindars / thakurs, any mention of Nepal should be removed from the page.
The problem with your argument is that this page is not exclusively about the title. It is a page about a surname: it lists 14 people with surname Bisht, none of whom are zamindars.
If you want to create a page exclusively about the zamindar/thakur/thokdar title "Bisht", please do so at Bisht (feudal title). For example, have a look at Rawat (title), Inamdar (feudal title), Rao (title), Khan (title), Pillai (Kerala title), Rana (title), Rai (title) etc. These pages are about the historical titles: there are separate pages that list people with the surnames, Rawat, Inamdar, Rao, Pillai, Rana, Rai etc. utcursch | talk 20:52, 29 August 2017 (UTC)Reply

Merge Bisht and Bista

edit

@User:Utcursch brother,

Bisht is the surname of the Rajput caste in Uttarakhand while Bista is a surname of the Chhetri caste of Nepal. Both are widely accepted as Kshatriya castes before the modern border came, they naturally were part of the same geographical entity of ancient South Asia.

Bisht and Bista are only romanization variant of the same name in Devanagari बिष्ट if you can understand Devanagari (Hindi, Nepali, Kumaoni, Garhwali). So, you can merge the less popular term "Bista" article into the more popular Indian version "Bisht". 2400:1A00:B011:68F:C026:7D02:A2C2:7CA5 (talk) 03:06, 11 March 2022 (UTC) ->Reply

Surname Bisht in Nepal

edit

Raute Castes in Nepal Wikipedia has stated "In Nepal, Bisht was adopted as a surname by Raute and Raji people." This is incorrect. Most Raute and Raji people live semi nomadic lives in the forested areas of West Nepal and claim decent from royalty and have surnames like Shah, Shahi, Thakuri etc. not Bisht/ Bista. Pls correct this. 2405:ACC0:1204:97A2:11B7:C1DA:B34D:415D (talk) 10:58, 5 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
